What's happening around our school...

Prep

Aside from our hard work in the classroom, we have enjoyed our last community visit. Lenny’s father, who is a Police Officer, came to visit us to talk about all the different types of police personnel in our community. We were able to look at the equipment he uses too. It was fun to try some of them and put some on.

The Pevan and Sarah concert was also so much fun. Lots of smiles were had, dances danced to and songs sung. Mrs Weekes and Amali even got to go up on stage and perform a song. When we returned to school we had a special treat - hot chips for lunch. What a day!

Grades 1 & 2

Grade 1 - Scienceworks

Last week the Grade 1’s had a fun day exploring Scienceworks as part of our Space unit. We watched ‘Tycho goes to Mars’ in the planetarium and were amazed by the seats which reclined all the way back. We were shown the night sky and found some of the planets and constellations we can see. We moved our bodies in the Sportsworks area and raced against Cathy Freeman. To end our day we entered the Energy Lab to watch the Blast Off show, where we learnt about how rockets are blasted into space.

Grade 2 Log Cabin Day Camp

Our Grade 2 students had a wonderful time at day camp, experiencing all kinds of weather; rain, hail and sunshine which only added to the adventure. Throughout the day, students enjoyed a range of exciting activities including mini golf, pedal go-karts, archery and a calming bush-weaving craft. They shared delicious food, spent time with friendly animals and soaked up the sights and sounds of nature. Most importantly, they made special memories while enjoying the company of their friends.

It was a big day filled with fun, laughter and resilience, and we are so proud of how beautifully they embraced every moment.

Grades 5 & 6

In Literacy, our focus has been on speech writing.

Our Grade 5 students who are hoping to become school leaders in 2026 have been crafting their school captain speeches, while all other Grade 5s have written a hypothetical speech to showcase their developing persuasive and expressive writing skills.

We have been delighted by the creativity and care students have brought to their work, with topics ranging from campaigning for house captain to pitching themselves as video game captain! And we couldn’t be prouder of our aspiring school captains, each of whom presented their speech with impressive composure and maturity.

Meanwhile, our Grade 6 students have been immersed in a very special writing project - composing the personal speech that will be read about them by a peer at their Graduation ceremony. They have taken time to look back on their years at Kalinda, reflecting on favourite moments, cherished friendships, challenges they’ve overcome, and the qualities they hope their peers will remember most.

In Maths, Grade 5/6 students have been working on problem-solving project tasks that bring together all of their learning from this year. Students have applied their multiplication, division, measurement, and financial planning skills to meaningful, real-life scenarios. These projects have encouraged them not only to use efficient strategies but also to justify their thinking, collaborate with peers, and make logical decisions - skills that will support them well as they continue their mathematical journeys.

Japanese

Preps – Students have been learning about 7.5.3 celebrations, such as how to say age and the animals that symbolise longevity in Japan. They also enjoyed making origami long-life lilies to take home in their 7.5.3 celebration bags.

Grades 3 & 4 – Students have been learning Japanese calligraphy, including the three key techniques and proper posture. They concentrated very hard as they wrote the kanji character “春” using special black ink.
