Reading
Students have enjoyed making up actions that match our new sounds, you could ask them to share these with you. There are many variations of the /oo/ (ue as in blue, u-e as in rude, ew as in blew, ui as in fruit, oo as in goose) and /yoo/ (ue as in Tuesday, u-e as in tune, ew as in new, u as in music) phonemes as represented by eight different graphemes (see below). Practice hearing the differences for example, for the word tune – /t/oo/n/ and /t/yoo/n/. In the background, we are in our busy assessment period ahead of reports, we are all so amazed at the wonderful growth they are all showing. The students should all be very proud of their progress in their reading, it is evident they have been working very hard.
Writing
Beginning a new unit of learning we are introducing the text Dingo by Claire Saxby. In our discussions of the text students will discuss the story by sharing feelings, thoughts and by making personal connections with our own experiences. Strengthen their comprehension and key themes explored in Dingo by activating background knowledge and expanding vocabularies. Students will be asked to identify the differences in informative texts and narratives drawing on their prior knowledge about facts vs opinion from earlier on in the year.
Numeracy
In Numeracy we will be looking into time-related concepts including student's understanding of the days of the week and months to identifying the elements of a calendar. They learn about the length of a year, a decade, and a century, using interactive activities and error-spotting tasks to solidify their knowledge. We will analyse features of analog clocks, emphasising distinguishing features and practical applications. Skills advance from reading o'clock times to drawing clock hands and estimating the number of tasks completed within a minute.
Inquiry
In the next fortnight of learning students will be exploring light and shadows. We are looking forward to some nice weather as we will be heading outside to record and observe patterns and shapes cast by different natural and man-made objects in our environment.
Students have been enjoying our hands on activities when creating their own songs and music. Check out the harmonica's we made!
Wellbeing
In wellbeing, we are learning about what respect looks like and feels like in different scenarios. Students will work collaboratively in teams to role play conflicts that could happen in the yard and in class to problem solve solutions. This will involve incorporating regulation strategies that we have practiced from our Ready to Learn Plans, skills in help seeking and the importance of fairness. These lessons aim to reinforce a strong sense of respect for themselves and others.
