5/6 Mad About Science Incursion

Mad About Science – Natural Disasters Incursion
On Wednesday we had Asti from Mad About Science visit our school to lead an exciting Natural Disasters incursion, which ties in perfectly with our Term 4 Inquiry unit.
Students explored how weather occurs and investigated the water cycle, focusing on condensation, precipitation, and cloud formation. They also learnt about tectonic plates and how natural events such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and fire tornadoes happen. A highlight was the hands-on experiments where students discovered how to make clouds and instant snow!
5/6B students were highly engaged and shared some of their observations and wonderings during the activities:
Snow Crystals in a Bottle Experiment:
• Lenka: “It feels like ice but softer.”
• Eve: “The instant snow frosted!”
• Saisha: “It stings or sizzles on your hand!”
• Georgia: “Amazing!
• James: “How did it grow so much?”
• Ari: “It’s icy but squishy!”
Tsunami Experiment:
• Leo: “Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!”
• Finn: “Quick, put your finger on the stopper!”
• Emily: “Bubbles and fizz!” (followed by squeals of delight!).
It was a fantastic, hands-on learning workshop that sparked curiosity, laughter, and plenty of scientific thinking across our senior classrooms. The children's feedback is that it was so fun and that the session did not last long enough!
