Year 4 Update

Learning Outlook for Weeks 5 & 6
🧠 Maths
In Mathematics during Week 4, students focused on converting improper fractions into mixed numbers and demonstrated their understanding by completing their end-of-unit Fractions task.
This week, we are beginning our new unit on Statistics and Probability. Students are learning to understand and use chance and statistics vocabulary and are being introduced to independent and dependent variables in simple experiments. They are also exploring the difference between independent and dependent events and will design and conduct a chance experiment using spinners to investigate equal probability and fairness.
📚 English
In English last week, students identified persuasive devices in written texts and practised writing complex sentences to make their writing more interesting and detailed. They also focused on using commas correctly in complex sentences and explored the Latin root mot/mov/mob to understand how root words help uncover meanings of unfamiliar words.
This week, students are learning to use their five senses to visualise as they read, helping them create mental images and strengthen comprehension. They are learning how to use linking words to connect ideas so their stories flow smoothly, and are practising how to punctuate and format dialogue correctly in narratives. Students are also exploring the Latin root rupt (as in erupt and interrupt) to extend their vocabulary and deepen their understanding of word origins.
💬 SEL
In SEL, students discussed and described some of the ways people and families can be different. They explored the importance of showing respect for difference in friendly and inclusive ways and how using people’s names and pronouns respectfully helps create a positive classroom community.
🌏Humanities
In Humanities, students continued working on their Term 4 Sustainability Project. In Week 4, they focused on understanding how products use energy and resources and explored ways to make their designs more energy-efficient and sustainable. Students suggested practical changes to improve their prototypes and explained why these changes were important. This week, students are beginning to build their prototypes, using recycled materials to bring their sustainable design ideas to life. They are learning to use materials creatively and explain how their prototypes reflect their design plans.
As shared with families on Compass, students have been asked to bring in recycled materials from home to support their projects. These include cereal boxes or cardboard, plastic containers or bottles, scrap paper, foil or light metals, and small reusable items like buttons or bottle caps. These materials are essential, as students will not be able to complete their prototypes without them. Construction will begin this week, and at the end of the term, Year 4 will proudly showcase their sustainable models and prototypes to other students across the school.
Hillsmeade Heroes
All students are now required to wear their school hat during recess, lunch and outdoor activities. Please ensure your child brings their hat to school each day.
Just a reminder each class has homework and spelling words each week. Please check class compass pages or contact teachers if you are unsure what needs to be completed and when.
