Our Learning - Weeks 5 & 6

✍️ English

In Reading, we are continuing to explore how to summarise non-fiction texts and identify main ideas and supporting details. Students also practised recognising persuasive language and techniques within texts. This includes revisiting The Great Kapok Tree.

  • We are summarising texts using main ideas.
  • We are identifying and comparing different points of view.
  • We are exploring persuasive language and author’s purpose.
  • We are comparing The Great Kapok Tree and Dear Greenpeace.
  • We are analysing advertisements and their persuasive techniques.

In Writing, students have planned and written persuasive letters using clear structure and audience-appropriate language. We will explore how advertisements persuade their audience using slogans, images and emotional language, as well as continue to practise compound sentences and key spelling rules.

  • We are planning and writing persuasive letters.
  • We are writing compound sentences using FANBOYS.
  • We are editing and publishing our letters using ARMS and CUPS checklists.
  • We are learning how to use apostrophes for contractions and possession.
  • We are designing and creating persuasive advertisements.
  • We are designing our own products and creating poster and video advertisements using slogans and persuasive features.

Maths

In week 5 & 6 in Maths,  students explore concepts in both Probability and Shape. In Probability, students played interactive games and used hands-on materials to investigate how likely different outcomes were and how probability can be described using words like likely, impossible, and even chance. In Shape, we reviewed the features of 2D and 3D shapes, and identifying their properties.

Probability

  • Explored outcomes as likely, certain, impossible, even chance and unlikely.
  • Played corners using suits of cards and collected data using tally marks.
  • Used dice games and counters to record and explain outcomes using vocabulary and fractions.
  • Predicted and tallied results from chance-based games (e.g. spinning wheels, horse races).

Shape

  • Name and identified 2D and 3D shapes in and around the classroom.
  • Use Indigenous perspectives to explore shape in outdoor environments.
  • Constructe 3D shapes using playdough and matchsticks to learn about faces, edges and vertices.
  • Explore 3D nets using Polypad and identified 2D faces on 3D objects.

🌏 Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, we are exploring where our food comes from, how it's produced, and the journey it takes from farm to table. As part of our Lunch Box Legends unit, we are also looking at sustainability and food waste, encouraging students to think critically about the food they eat and how we can make more environmentally friendly choices.

Week 5 & 6 Highlights:

  • We are learning what food waste is and how it impacts our environment.
  • We are designing persuasive posters to encourage others to reduce food waste.
  • We are exploring how "ugly" fruits and vegetables can still be used.
  • We are turning ugly fruits into superheroes with names and slogans to promote rethinking waste.
  • We are brainstorming and designing inventions to help reduce or reuse food waste.

🧠 Social and Emotional Learning

In Weeks 5 and 6, students focused on respecting diversity and building strategies to manage stress and emotions. They explored how people and families can be different, and discussed how to show respect through names, pronouns, and inclusive behaviours. They also investigated the meaning of stress, how it feels, and developed strategies to manage challenges in everyday life.

Week 5 – Respecting Diversity and Difference

  • We are learning to identify and celebrate the different ways families and people can be unique.
  • We are learning to show respect by using people’s correct names and pronouns.
  • We are sharing and discussing important celebrations, stories, and traditions from our families and cultures.

Week 6 – Coping with Stress and Strong Emotions

  • We are learning to understand what stress feels like and what might cause it.
  • We are exploring how people cope with challenges and learning calming strategies.
  • We are creating a class list of positive coping tools to use when feeling sad, angry, or overwhelmed.

🗞️News and reminders

Drink bottles:

Please remember to bring a drink bottle to school every day. It saves disruption to your child's learning when this is accessible within the room. They are able to fill up their bottles in a nearby classroom.

Homework:

Students are encouraged to complete one or two activities from the homework grid each week for the rest of the term. Once an activity is completed, they just need to cross it off and write the date in the box so teachers can keep track of what’s been done.

Reading continues to be an important part of homework, and we encourage students to read for at least 10 minutes on 3 to 4 nights each week.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Hats:

A friendly reminder that school hats are required to be worn during recess and lunch. Students who do not have a hat will have to spend recess and lunch under the shade sails. We also encourage wearing sunscreen and drinking plenty of water during the school day.
