Principal`s Message

The energy around our school this week has been palpable as we prepare for our annual fete. The buzz of excitement has filled classrooms and corridors, and I would like to extend my thanks to our wonderful organising committee who have been working tirelessly, putting the final touches together. Their dedication ensures this cherished community event will be another memorable celebration.
A Look Back at Our History
As we prepare for the fete, we’ve also been reflecting on the rich history of our buildings. The George Street School, designed by renowned architect Henry Bastow, first opened its doors in 1874. Bastow’s work is seen across Victoria, with other examples including Carlton Primary and North Melbourne Primary, each showcasing his distinctive approach to school design. Our own Napier Street Building was opened in 1970 as the Infants School, marking the moment when George Street School was officially renamed Fitzroy Primary School. Looking through our archives, one detail that stood out was how few trees surrounded the grounds in the 1970s a stark contrast to the leafy environment our students enjoy today.
Napier Street Building Works
Speaking of our buildings, the Napier Street building works are progressing well. All external brickwork has now been completed, and the team has begun hanging new internal walls. Just yesterday, the new slab for the multipurpose room was laid—a significant milestone in the project. We are excited to see these improvements taking shape, which will provide our students and community with modern, flexible spaces to learn and gather.
Welcoming International Visitors
This week we were honoured to host a visiting delegation from Kiribati. Their focus was to learn more about how Fitzroy Primary School teaches bilingual education. It was a wonderful opportunity to share our practices, exchange ideas, and strengthen connections across cultures. Our students proudly demonstrated their learning, and the delegation left inspired by the vibrancy of our bilingual program.
Foundation 2026 Transition Day
Another highlight was our very first Foundation 2026 transition day. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces returning with younger siblings, alongside new families joining our community. The excitement was contagious as our newest members explored classrooms, met teachers, and began their journey with us. This milestone marks the beginning of an important chapter, and we look forward to supporting these students as they grow and thrive at Fitzroy Primary.
Free public transport for people aged under 18
From 1 January 2026, people aged under 18 can travel free on all Victorian public transport services. This includes trams, trains, buses and coach services.
To access free travel, they must use a new youth myki card and tap the card on and off each time they travel. For areas that do not use myki cards, they must show their myki card to travel free.
More information about the youth myki card will be available later in Term 4, 2025 – refer to the myki types webpage on the Transport Victoria website.
