Round the classes

Indonesian: Ibu Susan

In Indonesian the older students have been busy learning and using prepositions of place like above and below to describe the location of sea animals. Rachel’s class has begun researching sea turtles and Sallie’s students are designing and making board games about sea turtles.

The younger classes have been reading and writing short sentences using adjectives and numbers with sea creatures. We have also revisited our animal rap song Kucing Anjing, which contains several under the sea animals.

Science: Paige

Our Junior Primary students have been exploring how to care for plants and animals. We explored the importance of water for both plants and animals then completed an experiment where we added food colouring to a plant's water before predicting and evaluating the outcome. Next week students will begin their STEM Challenge to design and build an animal and an environment where that animal could survive.

Our Middle Primary students have been deepening their understanding of life cycles, including the lifecycle of a plant and the process of metamorphosis. Next week students will begin planting and caring for their own seeds.

Our Upper Primary students have continued to explore the concept of human and animal adaptations for survival and have extended this knowledge through exploring the concept of evolution. They will soon complete a STEM Challenge requiring them to design and build a shelter for a specific animal that meets its needs for temperature regulation and protection.

PE: Troy

Over the past two weeks students have been preparing for Sports Day. This year we have a total of ten events which combine tabloid and athletic events for the day. Students have had the opportunity to learn the rules and understand the key values wanted to be seen on the day.

Students have learnt hurdles and class relay, long jump, javelin, egg and spoon as well as sack race. We look forward to learning all events before the day.

HASS: Leonie

Receptions have been investigating the "family" - what is family, who is in their immediate family [lives with them] and extended family. They have also included pets among those they love, care for and support. They also wrote a great recipe for "family" with the ingredients to use - love, care, people, sharing, family time, meals, hugs, comfort, dreams, goals and heart.

Year 1 have investigated "family" from the perspective of families over time and how families can be the same but different. The bigger perspective of what their family might have been like before they were born and comparing it to what it is like now.

Year 2  have been finding what we can use to uncover history with the use of the treasures of time view and interpreting old buildings, comparing photos of then and now and what stories can buildings tell us.

Year 2/3 have been investigating the idea of "community", history, change and what it may be like in the future. Next, they will consider the idea of ghost towns [ Cook, Farina] and decide on the ingredients needed to build a strong community cake where everyone feels they belong.

Year 3/4 have continued building knowledge and awareness around Australia before contact and special focus is on Australia's first people.

Year 5/6 have been investigating life before Federation in Australia and the conditions which led up to Federation. Students then have had the opportunity to investigate areas or topics from there which especially interested them to answer questions they formed themselves. They have used this material in "Pair and Share" learning strategy to amplify the content covered.

Gardening: Jo

Around the veggie patch and Orchard, you may have noticed some bamboo structures appearing.

The 4/5 students have been constructing some trellises to grow climbing vegetables. The students needed to use group skills to complete the task including design, working together, construction of their design and planting seeds that climb.

Green waste was also attended to, reminding students what can be composted and what cannot.
