Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four

Welcome to our latest LC4 Newsletter! How is it already Week 8? It’s hard to believe we have just two weeks to go until the end of term—time certainly flies when we are busy learning and growing together. We would like to extend a big congratulations to our Year 5 students for successfully completing their NAPLAN assessments. Your focus, effort and positive attitude throughout the testing period were commendable and you should all be very proud of yourselves. We would also like to acknowledge our Year 6 teachers and students for the positive encouragement and respect they showed during this time. Thank you for being flexible with changes to routines and for maintaining a calm and quiet learning environment to support your peers.

We are also very sad to be saying goodbye to our Learning Centre Leader, Beth, over the next couple of weeks as she begins an exciting new role as a Deputy Principal in Ballarat beginning Term 2. We wish her all the very best on this new adventure and have no doubt she will do an incredible job enriching the lives of students and staff at her new school. Beth’s final day with us will be the last day of term!

Year 5

Literacy: In Literacy, students have been continuing to look at the novel “War Horse”. The story at the moment is becoming very interesting as we are coming across moments which shape and change the storyline. Students are working on persuasive writing techniques, conjunctions and compound sentences to improve on their writing skills.

Numeracy: In Numeracy, we have begun streaming where students across the whole Year 5 cohort have been split into groups to assist with their Mathematics. The focus this fortnight for Numeracy has been Multiplication and Division - students have been engaged and have enjoyed working with different teachers and students.

Inquiry: In Inquiry, students have been looking at the three levels of Government. We have been creating a brochure which outlines what we understand about each level. The brochure includes; What are the responsibilities for each level of government, Who is in charge, visual images and a list of facts. We have enjoyed creating the brochures and have learnt many new things regarding the topic of Government.

5/6 Wellbeing: In Wellbeing, we have been learning about character traits and strengths. We have been reading scenarios and identifying what strength a person may have in the situation presented. Some traits that we have looked at particularly are; hope, optimism, humour, honesty, courage, fairness, determination and self-control.

Year 6

Literacy: We have been reading and responding to queries from our class novel Rivet Boy, bringing us to the end of the book. The students have explored the theme of “Child Labour” through the lens of this novel as well as supplementary reading of articles on Child Labour. Students were guided to write their third body paragraph about the physical impacts of child slave labour. They re-read, proofread and edited their writing in response to teacher feedback. Also see some examples of modal vocab the students created below.

Numeracy: Students have been working across different groups based on their needs to learn the algorithm for short division, representing remainders as fractions and decimals. They are using calculators and spreadsheets when applying the order of operations.

Inquiry: Students created a poster to demonstrate their understanding of the three key institutions of Australia’s system of government by explaining what each institution does. Students investigated the responsibilities of each level of government by forming taskforces to respond to major events.

Religion: Students reflect on the Stations of the cross following the steps for Circle of Viewpoints. They brainstormed the different perspectives to “step inside” one character from the chosen stations: Mary, Simon of Cyrene, Veronica, a Roman soldier or a bystander.
