Year 3/4 News

As the end of Term 1 draws near, the Year 3 and Year 4 students have continued to work with focus and energy. Our Year 3 students are looking forward to beginning their swimming lessons next week and some of them are also making preparations for their first Reconciliation.
Technology
At OLSC we have a BYOD ( Bring Your Own Device) policy. All students in Year 3 and Year 4 are expected to have a Chrome Book laptop. We are now using technology as a tool for learning so students are asked to bring their laptop to school every day. Please make sure these are fully charged.
If you and your child are yet to sign the ICT agreement please contact your child's teacher ASAP. Students will NOT be allowed to use technology until the agreement is signed.
Reminders
- Specialist Day is every Tuesday - please ensure that sports uniform is worn, and that your child has a hat and drink bottle ready for the day.
- No hat no play - please make sure your child brings their hat everyday
- Make sure that all your children's belongings (clothes, lunch boxes, drink bottles, stationery, etc.) are clearly labelled with your child's name. Labelled property can be easily returned to its owner.

Year 3
A big congratulations to our Year 3 students on completing their first ever NAPLAN tests. We are so proud of all of you and commend you on your effort!
Literacy
In Literacy, students have continued their author study on Phil Cummings, specifically focussing on the text Night Watch. They have been combining what they have learnt over the past four weeks about character, setting and plot to create a terrific story summary of the text.
In PhOrMeS we have been revising the three sounds for ‘ed’, the use of ‘ai’ and ‘ay’ and are now moving into ‘ee’ and ‘ea’.
Numeracy
Over the past two weeks, in numeracy, we have been learning about our new topic of time.
Students have been learning about elapsed time as well as duration of events. In particular we have been estimating the duration of events e.g. how long it takes to write all the letters in the alphabet, and using stop watches to check the actual time taken.
Inquiry
Students have continued working on their prototypes, working collaboratively with their project partner. They have used a variety of materials to bring their designs to life and are preparing to present to one another.
Religion
As the countdown to Reconciliation is on, students have been learning about the steps that will occur during reconciliation including:
- Our parents presenting us to Father and Father greeting us
- Making the Sign of the Cross
- Telling Father our sins and asking for forgiveness
- Father talking to us and giving us our penance
- Praying the Act of Contrition and receiving forgiveness
Just a reminder that Reconciliation is next Wednesday the 25th of March at 6:30pm. We look forward to seeing all of our families there as we celebrate our students’ first Sacrament!
Year 4
In Literacy, students have been learning about how narratives and short stories are structured. They explored the different parts of a narrative, including the orientation, complication, events and climax, and resolution. Using their class texts, students created story maps to help identify these parts and better understand how stories are organised. During Writing, students were given a choice of different picture prompts and were asked to plan, write and edit a short story. They used their knowledge of narrative structure to help organise their ideas and create engaging stories.
In Mathematics, students have been finishing their unit on Time. They have also begun learning about the relationship between multiplication and division by exploring fact families and how these number relationships work together.
In Religion, students have been learning about the story of Passover and how it connects to the season of Lent. They have also explored how people of the Jewish faith celebrate Passover and the significance of this important tradition.
For Inquiry, students have been fortunate to hear from several guest speakers from our school community. Nimal, Sarah and Chelsea shared how they volunteer with different organisations and the importance of helping others. This week, students also welcomed guest speaker Cr Peter Maynard, who spoke about the role of the local council and how it supports the community.
In Wellbeing, students explored the different types of moods and emotions people can experience. They discussed what might cause these feelings and ways they can support someone who may be experiencing them.
It has been fantastic to see students engaging thoughtfully in their learning and showing curiosity across all subjects.
Cheers Year 3/4 Team: Sam, Krystin, Rita, Josh, Hayley, Ben Anthony, Anastasia, Cheryl, Kelsey, Helen, Gabby & Sandy
