Teaching and Learning

Rosina Gemmill, Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching

Buongiorno a tutti!

Our 3/4 students headed off to Billabong this week for their annual camp, so it was a bit quiet for a couple of days. Following on from our touch of green for St Patrick’s Day, on Friday we wore a touch purple for epilepsy to raise awareness of this disorder.

Students have been completing their end of term progress monitoring assessments across the curriculum areas and preparing for cross-country.

NAPLAN finished last Friday, so that’s done for another year.

Not much more from me........

Have a wonderful Easter and a safe and restful term break.

BUONA PASQUA!

Ciao for now!

Foundation

The Foundation class has been busy working on our letter formation this fortnight. We have been practicing using different mediums to write (pencils, whiteboards, and paint brushes). We went outside this week to have a go at writing on magic scrolls where you write with a paintbrush and water and then it disappears. We learnt our first vowel letter this week, creating much excitement as we can now read words. Yay!

During numeracy we have continued learning to read and write numbers 0-10. We have used counters and 10-frames to make numbers understanding one more and one less.

As a class we have been discussing who we can trust to talk to both online and in person. It was important to talk about this and remind everyone that sometimes we should not share our personal information with others.

Over the past fortnight we had fun with the Year 1's who joined our class and worked on social skills including playing cooperatively and being inclusive in the games we play!

Year 1/2 B

The Grade One's and Two's have been working hard during our InitaLit sessions. This is being well supported with our nightly reading programme. So far, we've had 9 students record at least 25 nights of reading. Reading every day reinforces the reading skills that the students are developing. As we complete Term One, new diaries will be ready to go home as Term Two begins

Year 1/2 F

Grade 1-2F have completed our first unit on Place Value, we had great fun rolling a die to create three-digit numbers and identifying which digit was in the hundreds, tens and ones place.

We also used the bee-bots to experiment with and create a code for the bee-bot to follow through the toy shop. We have also experimented with following different directions and correcting errors in the instructions.

All students have had a great term of learning and are to be congratulated on how well they have settled into the new routines and the progress they have made with their learning has been great to see.

Year 3/4

As the 3/4 class finished our class novel Kenzukes Kingdom, students reflected on key features of the book. They designed and created a map on the book.

Year 5/6

Literacy

Students have completed the book A Ghost in my Suitcase and finished off their persuasive texts. Here is a concluding paragraph written by a student:

Levi Brereton

Therefore, learning family history is absolutely important, and has strong benefits. This will certainly strengthen family connections, boost overall wellbeing and preserve cultural heritage and traditions. Take a leap of faith and ask your parents or grandparents about it today!

Students have been reading our new novel The Silver Donkey and have begun writing Fable's to respond to the text. Our students have planned beautiful Fables with strong morals. We look forward to seeing how their stories unfold!

Numeracy

Students have been working hard in our new unit Operations. They have been exploring strategies to solve multiplication and division equations in preparation for the multi-step problems. It’s been great to see their confidence grow as they build these skills! This week, we have looked at solving equations with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They should be extremely proud of themselves!
