Year 5/6

What a fantastic first term we have had in Year 5/6.  This term has flown by and we have built relationships and our learning across Term 1 in our new classes. Congratulations to our Year 5 students who last week took part in NAPLAN testing and demonstrated resilience, patience and determination.  We are all very proud of you and your efforts. We have a number of students representing our school next week in cricket and AFL 9's footy and thank our families for their ongoing support of our extracurricular and school programs.

English

We have finished our class novel War Horse.  Over the course of the unit students have engaged with the novel as we have read and also drafted a published both a narrative piece of writing and more recently, a persuasive on 'If Horses Should Have Been Used in World War 1'. Students were able to draw conclusions from the text and use this as evidence to support their arguments. Students have also continued to hone their literacy skills with language conventions, handwriting and reading fluency.

Maths

In Maths, students have been exploring Financial Maths and Data and Graphing, building important real life skills.

During our financial maths unit, students developed their understanding of money by working with budgets, calculating costs, and making informed spending decisions. They also explored percentages and calculating discounts, to help them understand how sales and pricing work in real life situations. This supported students in making comparisons and thinking critically about value for money.

In our data and graphing unit, students collected their own data through class surveys and learned how to organise and represent this information using graphs. They identified different types of data, including categorical (nominal and ordinal), and focused on key graphing features such as clear headings, labelled axes, and accurate scaling. Students also interpreted and compared data, explaining trends and making observations. It has been fantastic to see students applying their skills to represent real data in clear and meaningful ways.

Humanities

The 5/6 classrooms have been buzzing during our Civics and Citizenship unit as students worked together to create their own political parties based on issues they care about. Through lots of discussion, teamwork and sharing ideas, students explored topics that are important to them and created persuasive speeches to bring their parties to life. When presenting to the class, students showed great confidence in sharing their opinions while also demonstrating strong collaboration, persuasive language and debating skills. It has been great to see students engaged with common issues, such as littering, and recognising that their voices and ideas can make a difference.
