Year 3/4

Literacy

During Literacy, our Year Three students completed their NAPLAN assessments in Reading, Writing, and Language Conventions, demonstrating their developing skills across these key areas. Meanwhile, our Year Four students explored the symbols of St Patrick’s Day and applied their creativity by designing and describing their own extinct animals.

Across the class, we have continued to build reading fluency through engaging topics such as Indoor Plants, Pokémon, and St Patrick’s Day, helping students practise accuracy, expression, and comprehension.

To support our writing, we explored the texts All My Treasures and Summer Blue, focusing on the descriptive language used by the authors, before creating our own imaginative versions inspired by these pieces. We have also begun regular typing practice to strengthen students’ confidence and efficiency with digital devices, recognising the importance of these skills in an increasingly technological world.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, Year Three students completed NAPLAN whilst Year Fours were challenged with number facts and multiplication puzzles.  We have also been developing their understanding of money by exploring the different coins and notes, including the people and animals featured on them. They practised ordering values, counting collections of money, and calculating change. Calculating change has been particularly challenging for some learners, so additional practice at home would be very beneficial.

Students also worked on rounding amounts to the nearest 5 cents. To support their learning, we used a combination of hands-on experiences with play coins and engaging online games to reinforce key concepts. Alongside this, we have continued to build number fact fluency in addition and subtraction, as well as strengthening skills in skip counting and recognising number patterns.

Humanities

As part of our Humanities unit, Our Dynamic Community, students worked collaboratively in small groups to design and create inclusive games for the class. They were encouraged to ensure their games were engaging, creative, and appropriately challenging for all participants. Students demonstrated a range of ideas, developing outdoor games, online activities, and creative options such as colouring competitions. Following the presentations, the class used a rubric to evaluate each group’s work, reflecting not only on the quality of the games but also on how supportive and encouraging each group was as facilitators. This process helped students build teamwork, creativity, and an understanding of inclusion within our community.

We also celebrated Harmony Day on Friday 20th by dressing up with a splash of orange to recognise and celebrate diversity and inclusion within our community. Throughout the day, classes engaged in reading books that explored themes of inclusivity and belonging, sparking meaningful discussions among students. To reflect their learning, students created thoughtful displays that highlighted the importance of acceptance, respect, and celebrating our differences.

Wellbeing

During our wellbeing sessions, we have been learning important skills to help us understand ourselves and others. We have explored ways to manage stress and calm our minds, identified our personal strengths, and discussed how to show respect in different situations. We have also focused on respecting diversity, learning about different cultures, family structures, and celebrations, and understanding how everyone’s experiences and traditions are unique and valuable. These lessons help us build empathy, make positive choices, and create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.

Thank you!
