Year 1/2

Literacy
In Literacy students have been working on personal memory stories. This involves students writing a story that is based on true event that has happened in their lives in the form of a narrative. Students have been working on writing in descriptive language, using their 5 senses to describe an object, and how to develop interesting characters.
To finish the unit students have brought in a toy from home to help inspire a personal memory story. We can't wait to see what students come up with their toys as inspiration.
Within phonics, grade 1 students have been learning about the /oe/ sound and different spellings of it, such as /ow/ as in 'show', /o_e/ like as in 'home' and /oa/ like in 'boat'.
Grade 2's have been learning about the /ee/ sound and the different spellings of it, such as /y/ like in 'sunny' and /ey/ like in 'trolley'.
Maths
In Maths, students have been continuing to build their understanding of number by ordering numbers from smallest to largest. They have explored different ways to represent numbers using MAB (blocks) and number lines to support their thinking.
Students have also been introduced to regrouping, learning how numbers can be composed and decomposed by trading ones for tens.
These hands-on experiences are helping students develop a strong understanding of place value and number relationships.
We have continued to learn about shape names and priorities of shape describing how many sides and corners.
Humanities
In Humanities students have been learning about the importance of community and how music can be used to strengthen this. Students have finished a unit on 'sound stories', where they learnt about how music can help strengthen story telling. Students make their own musical instrument, and played these in time with the play 'The Gruffalo'.
4r's
Over the last few weeks, we have been focusing on understanding respect from Aboriginal perspectives. Students have explored how respect can be shown for themselves, for others, and for Country.
Through discussions and classroom activities, students have been thinking about what respect looks like and sounds like in different situations. They have shared ideas such as using kind words, listening to others, taking care of the environment, and including everyone in play.
We encourage families to continue these conversations at home by talking about ways respect can be shown in everyday life.
We are very proud of the thoughtful and caring way students are engaging with this important topic.
Thank you for an amazing first term of the school year. Students have worked very hard and we are so proud of their efforts. We hope everyone has a lovely and safe easter and students enjoy their well deserved break.
Kind Regards, The 1/2 team.
