Student Leadership

Student Leadership 2026 Kicks Off
Our first Student Leadership Conference for 2026 was an exciting and productive start to what is shaping up to be a huge year at Northcote High School, especially as we celebrate our Centenary.
Leaders from Years 8 to 12 came together for a full day of collaboration, planning and goal setting. It was inspiring to see so many students sharing ideas, problem solving and stepping confidently into their roles. Across the day, teams began mapping out key events including the Centenary celebrations, wellbeing initiatives, major fundraisers and whole school community events.
As Year 12 Captains, we are especially excited to begin planning for the Big Freeze, the Year 12 Formal and several fundraising initiatives that will bring our school community together. What stood out most was the genuine commitment from all leaders to represent their peers and make a positive impact.
This year is about voice, action and community. We cannot wait to see these ideas come to life.
- Year 12 School Captains
On the 17th of February we, seven Year 10 students currently or previously involved in student leadership, went into the city to learn about the World’s Greatest Shave. Unbeknownst to us, we were also the example school that had done the greatest shave before and could share our insights with the other groups.
We took the train into the city and walked to Crowne Plaza, where the session was held. In case you’re wondering, no gambling took place, despite any jokes we may have made regarding the activity.
First, we heard form Xavier, a blood cancer victim and advocate for the Greatest shave. He was very well spoken and talked about how being diagnosed with blood cancer affected his work, relationships, and his footy. We then heard a bit more about what the leukemia foundation does, and how they support people with blood cancer and fund cancer research.
In the second half of the session, we shared with the other schools how we had run a successful greatest shave last year. Then we learnt more about how to start and grow a movement back in our school communities, with valuable strategies that we’re certainly implementing in our events as we continue through this year.
The conference was one to remember, and we can’t wait to put the ideas it sparked into action at our school.

VCE-VM Update:
The Year 11 and Year 12 VCE-VM classes have elected George and Loretta as class captains for 2026. Loretta’s speech was inspirational, and some excerpts have been included below.
“VM is all about teamwork and supporting one another. It is about showing up and preparing for your future. I would be honoured to represent us and educate others on what VM truly is.”
Furthermore, “VM is very important to me, and I would be delighted to help it receive the recognition it deserves.”
