From the Principal

It has been wonderful to see the momentum from the start of the year continue as students further settle into routines and opportunities across the school. As highlighted in our first issue, 2026 is both a year of learning and a year of celebration, and it has been pleasing to see our Centenary focus woven into the everyday life of the school.

Many of our Clubs and Activities are now up and running and the recent Clubs and Activities Expo, led by the Student Services team, was well attended. Students explored the wide range of clubs and programs available, reinforcing the importance of connection, and student voice. It is not too late to join in if you missed the opportunity.

Our first major sporting event of the year, the Swimming Sports Carnival, for our Year 7 and Year 8 students was a fantastic celebration of House spirit and teamwork. This Friday, our Athletics Carnival will provide another occasion for students to participate, contribute, and celebrate together with this opportunity being provided to our Whole School, Years 7-12.

Our specialist sports programs, including the Basketball Academy and Volleyball Program, are now well underway. Students have already begun engaging in structured training and development sessions, building skills and confidence as part of programs that continue to grow in strength and reputation.

Auditions for this year’s school production have now concluded, and preparations are underway as students begin the exciting work of bringing the production to life. School productions remain a highlight of our calendar and reflect the creativity, collaboration, and commitment that have been part of Northcote High School for generations.

Thank you to the families who attended the Year 7 and Year 12 Welcome events. These evenings provided valuable opportunities to connect with staff and school leaders and to begin building strong partnerships for the year ahead. Later this month, we look forward to welcoming Year 7 families to our Parents as Partners evening, an important opportunity to support students through their transition into secondary school.

Looking ahead, Parent–Student–Teacher Conferences will take place later this term, providing an important opportunity for families and teachers to work together to support student learning and progress. We will also present the 2025 Annual Report to the School Community, an opportunity to reflect on our achievements and consider our future directions.

Our Friends of Northcote Committee met last month to discuss the events happening this Term and then throughout the year, these events play an important role in strengthening the sense of community that has defined Northcote High School for the past century. Our TalkFest event is taking place on Thursday 12 March, at 6.30pm in the NHS Theatre.

This Issue, given that our students will be competing in the Athletics Competition this Friday, I have included an article in our “From the Archives” section about the history of our school Houses, highlighting the Connection that students had to their House. I hope you enjoy the read and support your House at the Carnival!
