Mr Stephen Chapman

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff, Students, and Friends,

In this week's newsletter, I’m giving an overview of the first 5 weeks of the Stage 5 WIN Project.  Then, I’ll summarise the Atomi Training we completed this past week.

Stage 5 WIN Project - 5-week review

Staff have just conducted the first review of the Stage 5 Project, which is new for 2026. Here is a copy of the Stage 5 WIN Project Presentation that Mr Gibney went through at the Community Engagement Evening for those Year 9 and Year 10 parents in attendance.  WIN stands for What I Need.  The main features of the project are:

  • Three levels of groupings for Year 9 and 10 classes. We have chosen the names of these classes to be Lumen, Flare, Spark and Aurora. They have L, F, S and A in the class name on Compass.   The Lumen classes are for those students at the top end who need more challenging work. Flare and Spark are the names for the middle classes.  The Aurora classes have students who need smaller classes and individual instruction.
  • These classes are the same for Religion/HSIE and Science/PE.  This means the staff from those pairs of subjects work together to align the content and skills so that it best suits the students.  The English and Mathematics classes are blocked.
  • All teams of staff are asked to consider how the students are going every five weeks, making class changes where necessary.  We have seen some changes in the classes this week due to this review.
  • There is a sustained focus on literacy skills in the WIN Project.

The feedback has mostly been positive so far.  Students are working well on their tasks and skills that are targeted at their needs.

Atomi Training

Atomi Training for Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 was done on Wednesday this past week.  Each year group had an hour with Liz Coolican; a past teacher who now conducts training for Atomi.  Then, the staff had their own session after school.

What is Atomi?  It is a web-based learning platform that uses videos, quizzes and a wide variety of media to help students learn at school.

Students first logged on and completed a quiz on NESA verbs, getting fast feedback along the way.  Then, they all learnt how to make a revision quiz for themselves on a topic to help with an upcoming assessment.

Year 12 were super focused on completing the NESA Verbs Quiz on Atomi during their training session.

As teachers, we learnt how to assign tasks, quizzes and content (videos) to our classes.  We also used AI within the platform to create learning materials focused on our specific texts and contexts.

Before I sign off, I’d like to remind parents/carers in Years 7 to 10 to make appointments for the two Parent/Teacher/Student evenings.  There are two sessions to choose from: Thursday, March 17 and Wednesday, March 25.  Just go to the people icon on Compass and select Conferences to make bookings.

Thank you all for your continued support of our wonderful college.
