Wellbeing and NAPLAN: Supporting Your Child

Next week, students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in NAPLAN. For many children, this is simply another school activity. For others, it can feel unfamiliar or even a little worrying. As parents and carers, your support plays an important role in shaping how your child experiences this time.

What is NAPLAN (and what isn’t it)?

NAPLAN is a national assessment that provides a snapshot of student learning in literacy and numeracy. It is just one measure, taken on one set of days, and does not define your child’s ability, progress or potential.

At school, we see your child’s growth every day — their effort, creativity, resilience and improvement across many areas. NAPLAN is only one small part of a much bigger learning picture.

Supporting Your Child’s Wellbeing

Here are some simple ways to help your child feel calm and confident:

Keep it low-key

Speak about NAPLAN in a relaxed and matter-of-fact way. Avoid building it up as something “big” or “important.”

You might say:

“It’s just a chance to show what you already know.”

Focus on effort, not results

Remind your child that trying their best is what matters most.

You could say:

“All I want you to do is have a go.”

Maintain normal routines

Regular sleep, healthy food, and predictable routines make a huge difference to children’s emotional regulation and concentration.

Help with worries

If your child expresses concern, listen calmly and reassure them. Let them know it is okay to feel nervous and that the teachers are there to support them.

At School

Teachers prepare students gradually and in developmentally appropriate ways. We aim to create a calm, supportive environment where students feel safe and encouraged. Breaks are provided, and students are reminded that effort is what counts.

A Final Reminder

Your child is so much more than a test score. Their kindness, creativity, humour, friendships and perseverance are equally, if not more important.

Together, by keeping the focus on wellbeing and effort, we can ensure NAPLAN is simply another learning experience in a positive and supportive school journey.
