Mathematics News

With the NSW Curriculum Reform, a new syllabus has been introduced for Mathematics 7 to 10.

In 2023, schools are planning and preparing to teach this new syllabus, with its introduction in 2024.

Due to the nature of the syllabus and that it is written in stages, with Stage 4 covering Years 7 and 8 and Stage 5 covering Year 9 and 10, 2024 will see Year 7 and Year 9 studying the new syllabus, and then moving into Years 8 and 10 in 2025. Students in Year 8 and 10 in 2024 will continue to study the current syllabus.

Key features of the new Curriculum include:

  • A more explicit focus on ‘working mathematically’ is embedded in the content and examples. Students work mathematically by communicating reasoning, understanding and fluency, and engaging in problem solving.
  • A new flexible Core-Paths structure enables teachers to tailor programs to meet students’ needs and encourages aspiration in students as they progress towards Year 11 and Year 12 courses.
  • Streamlined content with relevant examples that clarify the aims of the learning and provide application of real-life learning.
  • New topics including introduction to networks and data analysis.

The Mathematics Life Skills outcomes and content provide a learning pathway for some students with disability in Years 7 to 10.

For your child to be successful in mathematics, it is important that the work studied in class is reinforced through regular and consistent homework. It is also extremely important to have all necessary equipment each lesson, especially an approved calculator.
