Week of Inspirational Maths

This week at MRPS K - 6 some classes are trialling a different approach to learning maths.

One of the objectives is to challenge both teacher and student mindsets around what makes a good mathematician and to explore the value of collaborative, open-ended maths tasks. We want students to develop a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset about their mathematical ability.

According to Professor Jo Boaler’s (Stanford University, Youcubed founder) and other’s research, this approach supports students to realise they can achieve in mathematics. The research has its basis in neuroscience as well as studies that have found very positive results in maths achievements. It is moving away from the traditional memorisation and speed beliefs about what makes a good mathematician. The activities are based on group work that encourages problem solving and reasoning. It is about making mistakes, being persistent and understanding how connected all areas of maths are.

Students have been highly engaged in the activities as you can see.
