Grand Garden Designs
In our 5/6 Design & Technology Unit, ‘Grand Garden Designs’, we are designing new garden spaces around the Babajen.
We began by analysing the site and thinking about the needs and constraints of the space. We considered things like shade, nice places to sit and work and how to create a space that makes us feel calm.
We also had to think about what sorts of plants would survive in the space and what direction the sun comes from at different times of the day.
After brainstorming all of the possibilities, we began to measure the space, calculating the total perimeter, area and distance between things like garden beds and drink taps.
After completing all of our measurements, we began to sketch out mud maps of the site. These had to be accurate so that we can use them in the coming weeks to design a new garden space.
Here are some of our site maps so far:
Tarrawarra Art Museum
Grade 6 students were buzzing with excitement from the moment they arrived at school on the day we went to Healesville to visit the TarraWarra Art Museum. They engaged in and were presented with information about their current exhibit, The Soils Project.
This gallery explored the topics of colonisation, food diversity, and changes in environments, and featured displays of art from First Nations people from around Australia, as well as artists from Indonesia and The Netherlands. Students also partook in an observational art activity to create beautiful pieces using the amazing landscape surrounding them. The day was capped off with a visit to the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery, where students bought some sweet treats to add to their sweet memories built together.
On the 31st of October we went to TarraWarra Art Museum on an excursion and we got to walk around a beautiful art exhibit. There was an amazing garden, with great views, and we got to have some time to draw the landscape. I drew a big willow tree over the lake. We got to see a reconstructed smaller version of an artist's childhood house, with a broken exterior and a modern inside. It showed the feeling of where you go after death.
At the end of the day we went back on the bus and got ice cream, then we went back to school and shared our experience with the year 5s.
