Year 5 Writing


In Year 5, our budding writers have been inspired by the talents of published authors, using their sentence structures to craft their own sentences. One of Donna Rawlins’s carefully crafted sentences that has captivated our students is: "Every time I watched the ships sail past down the stinking river, out into the deep green sea, I wished it was me sailing away to a different continent."

 

 

Here are a few examples of the creative sentences our Year 5 students have written:

 

Occasionally, when I am drawing in my comfy bed or packed desk, I get a PERFECT drawing idea to pass time. Recently, I thought of drawing Van Gogh sunflowers, but with an addition, MUSHROOMS!

Often, I walk into the library, filled with colourful rows of new and old books, looking for a fantasy place to discover a one of a kind creation within. I glance through every shelf, excited and ready to find a book to lose my outside world in, a new space of neat words and illustrations.

Occasionally, I watch the aeroplane fly above me, soaring through the beautiful blue sky, through the fluffy clouds, I wish it was me in that plane. I would fly around the world.

Sometimes I watch the hot air balloons fly past drifting up into the cream coloured clouds, into the orange morning sun. I wish it was me up there. I would fly past the clouds and never stop.

Sometimes I see my father find a gold chunk in the sizzling gold mines of Ballarat, the gold is small and shiny. I wish he could keep the gold he finds. We travelled so far from China for so little money. Sometimes I wish I could go home to China.

Occasionally when I come home from school I am greeted with a home full of kind people and an animal, it always smells good and is always tidy. I wonder how I got such a kind family. I wish everyone could have such a great family.

Every once in a while the white stag returns to the towering forest, filled with lush green trees. Lots of hunting parties always go out searching for the one wish it will grant. I’ll be the one to catch it.

Every time I look out at the ocean I can hear it whispering back to me. I listen carefully. I think about jumping in but the water is too cold. I wish the water wasn’t cold so I can hug the ocean.

From dust to dawn I was looking through all the drawers, the silence was clear with only a thought, there was no light peeking through and no pictures to be drawn. The thoughts in my head were getting louder. I wish I was gone.

Every slow fleeting moment in time, I stare longingly at the sprinting children, they dance happily in the playground. They laugh and sing dainty on sturdy legs. I wish I could run out of my wheelchair. I would run to the ends of Earth.

Monday through Friday I watch the squirrels scramble up the trees, slowly, carefully moving along the branches. I wish I was an animal. I would go on a nighty time adventure.

Everyday I gazed at the frolicking waves on an empty beach, slapping against the yellow wet sand, I longed to dive into the foamy sea; off to a better place. I would explore the great unknown and never come back.
