Whole School Activities

New England Sings

Last weekend was a very busy weekend, with students participating in New England Sings at the University of New England on Saturday for rehersal and on Sunday for the concert. All students at Rocky River participated in this program, learning the songs and enjoying performing them over the last two terms. Unfortunately due to a clash of events not all students could participate in the actual concert, however it was still a very positive experience for our students to experience.

Our thanks to those students who were able to attend and to their families for making the trips on Saturday and Sunday. Many thanks also to Jess for supporting our students at the concert and for her work with all students each Thursday to teach the songs to them.

Thunderbolt's Festival

Thank you to our students, staff and family members who marched with us in the parade. Everyone looked great in the shirts we tye dyed at school and their hula skirts!

Lower Division

We have been busy examining how informative texts can be used to pass on information in ways that are effective while also being interesting to the reader. As part of this, we have been drawing flowers and identifying the features of these plants and identifying their purpose. We started by drawing a lablelled diagram to identify the various parts of the flower, and then we constructed paragraphs to provide further information.

Upper Division

NEUROGRAPHIC ART

Neurographica® was developed by the Russian philosopher, psychologist, architect, and professor Pavel Piskarev in 2014, and it's is built on solid scientific principles, combining visual thinking with the laws and patterns identified by various schools of psychology. We explored this form of art, with some stunning results!

PIANO FINGERS

Stage 2 have been experimenting with figurative language to enhance the meaning in texts; using written and visual clues, identifying and using metaphors to create imagery and using descriptive language to build descriptions and create imagery.

SONGLINES AND SYMBOLS

We have been learning about the textual concepts of imagery, symbol and connotation and narrative. Stage 3 students have been exploring cultural narratives to identify the difference in purpose between Dreaming Stories and Songlines. Stage 2 students have been exploring how authors use imagery and symbols in literature and identifying how figurative language can influence meaning. We read and viewed the Dreaming Story 'Tiddalik the Frog' we retold and represented the story using symbols.
