This Term has got off to a busy, creative and colourful start. I have been extremely proud of the creations that the children of Park Ridge have been working on. I have some amazing pieces to share with you.

Foundation students began the term with two Art lessons linked to their Science curriculum where we explored the senses of touch and smell. They then went onto patterns, painting and collage to create a picture of a sheep.

Year 1 have also had some Art lessons linking in with their Science Curriculum. They began the term with some observational drawings of soft toys and enjoyed bringing in their own soft toy to create a detailed portrait of it. The following week they decorated a wind-up toy using a variety of craft materials and then made their own spinning top and enjoyed the fun of making them spin and seeing the pattern they had drawn transform whilst it spun.

Year 2 students have a very craft- filled start to this final term! The first 3 weeks of the term they have been busy turning shoe boxes into their under the sea dioramas. They looked sensational. They have also transformed some recycled old CDs into some amazing fish. I love how we can incorporate the integrated studies topic of ‘under the sea’ into Art. The visit to the Aquarium triggered so many interesting ideas.

Year 3 students have worked on a 3-week artwork project that involved painting and oil pastels. They have created some delightful pictures of a wet dog shaking themselves. They look amazing.

Year 4 students began the term with an artist study focusing on the work and life of Leonardo Da Vinci.  The students made and completed a jigsaw of the famous Mona Lisa picture.  They then created some very effective suncatchers using black paper and cellophane. Some tricky folding, cutting and gluing exercises were part of the activity that resulted in beautiful decorations, some of which adorn the Art Room window or were taken home and are hopefully catching the sun on a window at home.

Year 5 students also started the term with an artist study with the contemporary artist and director, Tim Burton. They looked at the key characteristics of his style and went on to create their own excellent spooky portraits. The students then went on to complete a textile unit of work where they planned and then made some absolutely amazing dragon eyes using air dry clay. It is the first time we have done this activity at Park Ridge, and it was definitely a huge hit!

Year 6 students began this term by looking at the work of the surrealist artist, Salvador Dali. They learnt about what surrealism is and then, inspired the works they had seen, went onto produce their own surrealist artworks. Some very interesting and creative ideas were portrayed. Their latest project was to create a 2 layered painting that had a spooky theme. Fantastic work from the Year 6s.

I hope you enjoy seeing some of the creations that the students have worked on thus far this term.
