Art, Music, PE & STEM

STEM
Last week in STEM, Preps continued their movement work. They explored different objects and whether they slide, bounce, roll and spin.
Grade 1/2s started their work on light and sound. They had to write and/or draw responses to key questions about light and sound, including objects that make light and sound.
Grade 3/4s commenced their unit of work on forces, by looking at push and pull forces and how the amount of force applied to an object affects its movement.
Grade 5/6s revised their knowledge of non-renewable energy sources.
This week in STEM, all grades had a ‘STEM Challenge Week’. Students looked at facts about the Eiffel Tower and then used different materials – paper cups, unifix blocks, wooden blocks, cardboard tubes and playing cards – to work together in small groups to create their own tower structures.

In The Artroom
Students continued their study of the famous Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama – popular for her polka dot rooms, pumpkins and her infinity rooms where she uses mirrors to produce an amazing effect.
The Preps. Grade 1 and 2s created Yayoi inspired polka dot paintings of pumpkins using acrylic and watercolour paints. They also created a 3D pumpkin and placed in a “room” of mirrors to achieve an infinity effect.
Grades 5 and 6 finished designing a 3D half room, based on Yayoi’s Infinity room idea. They used many coloured designed papers of Yayoi’s and made a 3D effect. For their second lesson of the week, they played art based games, which was great fun.
This week artclub was on Tuesday for gr 3 and 4s. On Wednesday the gr 6s continued their art extension workshops. They made their own pastel paper using acrylic paints and sand and started their base pastel drawing.
There are currently two local art exhibitions that can be entered by students. They are the 2024 CAVENDISH FLEECE AND FLOWER SHOW and the BYADUK SPRING SHOW. Please see Ms Brown if you are interested in entering as an individual as the school won’t be entering student’s artwork for these shows.
Artist of the week awards go to:
- Adeline Kearney
- Polly Broad
- Asis Bhullar
- Olivia Baulch
Well done to everyone on an amazing week of Art!

MUSIC NEWS TERM 4 WEEK 3
Hello everyone,
In the past two weeks in Music, the Preps learned about dance in different times and cultures, and experienced how dance can tell stories. They also composed and clapped their own rhythm patterns.
The 1/2s played drum patterns and learned about surprise as an element of music.
Last week the 3/4s learned an East Timorese song and dance, but missed out on Music this week due to their exciting school camp.
Our 5/6s had a double dose of Music lessons instead this week, and nailed “Butter”, playing it on guitars, keyboards and ukuleles. They also played percussion to accompany Latin style music.
In Choir News, we have had three new people join us as we prepare for our end of year events. It’s great to have them with us!
MUSIC AWARDS
Last week’s individual Music Awards went to Harper Abrahamson and Oliver Harris in 1/2C for their excellent rhythm writing and drumming. The class Music Award went to 3/4A for good work in Music that week.
This week’s individual Music Awards go to Lyric Samuel and Sophie McAdam in 5/6C for their great keyboard playing, and the class Music Award goes to all of 5/6C for their amazing instrumental work.
Thank you,
Mrs Megan Garland
