Meet the Clean Up Club!

The Clean Up Club is a committed group of Year 3 students who make a positive difference to the amount of litter on the school yard.

We are part of a Clean Up Club that meets on Wednesday in the 3D classroom.

We can’t wait to do Eco Club next year as Grade 4s, so in the meantime we made this club instead.

We start by cleaning the yard and then we have been making a video to show the school and the world that they need to end littering.

Our video is about the life cycle of cups when they have been littered. Animals can die from eating litter that gets into the oceans. Also, we eat animals that have eaten plastic and this isn’t good for us either.

We hope you love the film and that you are inspired to protect the environment!

Clothing Exchange Success!

The Clothing Exchange was a fantastic event on the weekend, with over 100 attendees and nearly 600 items exchanged. As someone who loves clothes and fabric, it was a great way to update my wardrobe! However, it also served to highlight our very real problem with textile waste in Australia.

According to Clean Up Australia, Australia ranks as the second highest consumer of textiles per capita, with each person discarding about 23 kilograms of clothing annually. Donating unwanted clothes to the op shop is certainly better than putting them in the bin, but it isn’t the complete solution. Of the donated clothes, only about 15% are resold within Australia; the rest often end up in landfills, or are sent overseas. (On that note, we are lucky to be trialling a textile recycling chute at school… but please don’t bring any textiles to school until further notice, as it is currently full and will be emptied soon.)

The gym provided a great venue for the event (it was good to feel the cool roof technology in action!). A big thank you to Nicole for coming early and helping with the set up and logistics!
