Focus on Science

Foundation

This semester, our young scientists continued their exciting exploration of Physical Science! After diving into sound and light last term, they’re now investigating how things move. Kicking off the term with a lively game of musical statues, our Foundation students sorted images into "moving" and "still." They also had a blast experimenting with sports balls and toys, discovering all the ways they can make them move! As the term progresses, they’ll delve into the concepts of push and pull, observing how curved objects roll and flat ones slide.

Grade 1

This semester, our Grade 1s have been venturing into the fascinating realms of Earth and Space Science. After exploring the wonders of the sky last term, they’re now turning their attention to our planet! They began by examining Earth’s natural resources and learning how to categorise them. Later this term, they’ll uncover the interconnectedness of our resources, discuss how we can reduce, reuse, and recycle to protect our environment, and discover how many everyday items are made from Earth’s treasures.

Grade 2

This semester, the Grade 2s have been immersed in the intriguing world of Physical Science. Building on their understanding of forces from last term, they’re now channelling their knowledge into creating their very own arcade games featuring pushes and pulls! They’ve kicked off the project with researching, brainstorming and designing, and soon they’ll move on to creating, and testing their innovative games.

Grade 3

This semester, our Grade 3s have been delving into Earth and Space Science. After exploring the dynamics of the Sun, Earth, and Moon last term, they’re now investigating how Earth’s surface transforms over time due to natural processes and human influence. To start, they modelled mountain formation using towels and tubs, simulating how landscapes evolve over millennia. As the term continues, they’ll study weathering and erosion, uncover fascinating fossil facts, and conduct experiments to discover rock properties.

Grade 4

This semester in Grade 4, students have been captivated by the wonders of Physical Science. Having focused on heat energy last term, they’re now shifting their attention to forces. They began by experimenting with how different actions—like flicking a marble or kicking a soccer ball—can affect the distance and speed of objects. Upcoming explorations will delve into the strength of friction, the pull of gravity, and the invisible forces of magnetism!

Grade 5

This semester, our grade 5s have been exploring Earth and Space Science. Last term, students focused on our solar system and modelled the relative size of and distance between Earth, the Sun and the other planets. This term, students are investigating geological changes and extreme weather events that impact our planet. They’ve kicked off their studies with earthquakes, learning about their causes and researching a major historical earthquake. They will also be investigating tsunamis and volcanoes, considering how some extreme weather events are connected.

Grade 6

This semester, the Grade 6s have entered the dynamic world of energy! After focusing on light energy last term, they’re now examining electrical energy. They began by exploring how energy can transform in everyday items. As they move forward, they’ll focus on circuits and the flow of electricity, investigating circuit components and the properties of conductors and insulators.

And that is a wrap on the first year of Science at Fairfield Primary School!

A year filled with discoveries, adventures, experiments, investigations and learning.

I can’t wait to see what next year holds for us!

See you then!
