Crime & Politics
On Wednesday 9th October, 25 students from Ms Boyd and Mrs Graham’s Crime and Politics classes went on an excursion to the Melbourne Magistrates Court and Maroondah City Council to learn about court proceedings and local government. In the morning at the courts, we heard a multitude of cases on issues such as drug driving, speeding, assault and noise complaints. We were able to watch Magistrates and prosecutors in action as well as other court staff including interpreters and security guards. It was interesting to see how so many cases are processed in a short period of time and how defendants approached their cases.
In the afternoon we heard from the Mayor of Maroondah Cr Kylie Spears as well as Council staff from Local Laws, Youth Services, Arts and Culture, the Library and Governance. Local Government provides hundreds of critical services to our community and it was an afternoon full of information and interesting experiences.
