Level 5: Connect

5A Michelle Stainforth, 5B Joshua Miller, 5C Michael Day

For the next three weeks we will begin our assessment process, it is essential that your child brings a charged laptop to school every day.

Literacy

This week in Literacy we have begun to explore the text "One Minutes Silence" by David Metzenthen and Michael Camilleri. This text provides an opportunity for students to understand the perspective of war from that of both Australian soldiers and Turkish soldiers. It also presents the story through the eyes of students and finishes off with Colonel Mustafa Kemals' message to the families of the lost Australians which is very moving and evokes empathy.

We are using this text to develop understanding and  to plan and create the Level 5 assembly where we are commemorating Remembrance Day.

Maths

Students in Maths are covering Measurement and Geometry. Students are using their prior knowledge around length, area and perimeter and applying this knowledge to real world scenarios. We are covering topics from prior terms in our WIN time, ensuring students have brushed up on all topics necessary for the upcoming assessments.

Inquiry

"Refugees face challenges and opportunities as they journey toward safety, with individuals and communities playing an essential role in their integration."

In our final Unit of Inquiry, students have read and been exposed to refugee stories such as Anh Do's "The Little Refugee". In this unit, students will be completing independent investigations into developing countries. They will research the "push" and "pull" factors for migration, exploring first hand recounts of the journey migrants take to come to Australia and the treatment and feelings of migrants once arrived and settled in Australia.

Upstanders

On Tuesday October 29th the Upstanders spent the morning with artist Troy Innocent finalising thir decal designs.   During our upstander lessons the students have been collaborating to create works that engage with the community.  The aim is for all works to come together to form a playable map of the neighbourhood via footpath decals which will be installed throughout the municipality shopping centres in late Jan – March 2025. Their works will create safe and welcoming neighbourhoods where there is no space for bullying and cyber bullying, inviting other students, schools, and the community to be active players on their local streets. This has followed on from the initial introduction session, which students were introduced to by  Troy Innocent, and collaborated to create a map of all the ‘people in their neighbourhood.

2025 School Leadership

Earlier this week we sent home an email outlining the process the students were currently undertaking in the lead up to their student leaders selection for the 2025 school year. Over the past two weeks the students have completed activties developing a greater understanding of Prophe and Planner Leaders. This week we will finish this component by completing activites about Pople Leaders. The big take away that we are seeking is that leadership is not about them attaining a position of authority or a status. Leadership is about service and conributing to school life. It is not about being the person standing at the front making decisions.

Next Friday we will start to look at the specifics of leadership positions at SEPS in 2025. We will show them positions descriptions and make available to them, Nominations Forms forthe various positions and assistance in how to approach seeking to be of service. All the students have access to the Google Classroom page that has outlines of all the work and activities and templates we have introduced. Some students are yet to connect to the class page. This can be done at school and at home. Please take the time to loook through what has been delivered so far and a visit each week will keep you up to date. If your child has not yet joined the page, the code is: ie6jytm.
