The Next Fortnight of Learning

Literacy

Over the next two weeks we will be looking at the features of explanation texts. This will involve comparing explanation, information and procedural texts to begin to identify the differences in language, structure and purpose. In their Writers Notebooks, students will brainstorm and identify an area of interest. They will learn how to find reliable and accurate sources to inform their research ensuring that they are considering what necessary facts or details are needed to explain their 'how' or 'why' topic.

Maths

In the next two weeks of learning students will be reviewing their understanding of fractional thinking. This will involve students using visual representations to model denominator and numerator values in order to compare and order them. In our Applied Maths unit students will be investigating data displays to determine differences in the way collected information can be presented. This will allow them to begin to formulate and play their own surveys using open and closed questions.

Inquiry

Our Term 4 Inquiry Unit is called Solids Liquids and Gases. In the next fortnight, students are continuing to explore learning about the 3 states of matter with a specific focus on H20.  This will involve understanding how molecules in H20 are different in melting, freezing, vaporisation and condensation phases. Students will record observations from science experiments to further their understanding of these states.

Wellbeing

This term as part of our Wellbeing learning students will be exploring the following topics:

  • Personal Strengths
  • Character Traits
  • Positive and Negative Talk
  • Personal Coping Strategies

Celebration of Learning

Fable Writing

Last week we had a wonderful time sharing our fables with the prep and Year 2 students. It was a terrific celebration of our learning and I know our students were proud of the work they had done.

Inquiry Learning - Properties of Matter

Our students recently worked in groups to design an experiment to prove whether or not air was matter. They were given sticky tape, a ruler and two balloons. Their challenge was to prove that air was matter by proving it had weight and volume.

Maths Problem Solving - Time

Students have been working collaboratively to solve problem solving questions related to time. Students were challenged to use different strategies to determine elapsed time sharing their many ideas across the class.
