 Literacy

In Literacy we are continuing to learn about the Etymology of words which is the origin of how words were formed. We have learnt about the base words ‘scrib/ script’ which means ‘write.’ For example, de + scribe = describe/ pre + scribe = prescribe/ con + script = conscript.

We are also revising the Latin base word ‘aud’ meaning ‘to hear’ and ‘vis/ vid’ meaning ‘to see’. Words such as auditory, audio, auditorium, audition, audible, vision, video, television amongst many others are formed from these base words.

We are also learning about ‘Determiners’ which are the following: an, a, the. We are learning how to use these correctly in a sentence in addition to using the Determiner ‘an’ before words commencing with vowels.

Maths

In maths, we are continuing to learn more about Financial Maths. The students have been given worded financial maths problems to solve incorporating a variety of maths operations including financial maths. The students are also learning about measurement including mms, cms, m and kms/ mls, litres/ gms, kgs. We are also using a strategy called ‘Retrieval’ where the students are given previously learned maths from earlier in the year, and attempt to recall the method used to solve the maths. This strategy is working extremely well as the students are constantly revising maths in addition to learning new maths operations and strategies.

We are also learning about Transformations, Symmetry and Geometry including the directions of North, South, East and West and ¼, ½, ¾ turns both clockwise and anticlockwise.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the Level 3 students are continuing to learn about Democracy and how democracy works in Australia. The students are currently learning about the following:

A community is a group of people who have something in common. This may be living or working in the same area, a shared history or beliefs or interests.

We are also consistently referring to: Democracy also involves listening to others and making decisions fairly. In your classroom, this might mean voting on what game to play or taking turns speaking in a group. If one person always made the decisions, it would not be fair. Democracy gives everyone a voice, even if they don’t always get their way.

GEM Chat – We are continuing to discuss ‘Compassion’ and what this might mean to students at school.
