Writing – Poetry

Over the next two weeks, students will be exploring lots of different types of poetry, such as free verse, rhyming poems, acrostics and ballads. They will read and talk about poems to help them understand how poets use words, rhythm and structure to create meaning. Students will also learn to share their thoughts and feelings about what they read, helping them build confidence in understanding and appreciating poetry. As part of this learning, they will have the chance to write their own poems and experiment with interesting language and creative ideas. We are excited to see how students use their imaginations and develop their skills as young poets. We look forward to sharing some of their wonderful work with you soon.

Reading – Exploring Characters

During reading lessons over the next two weeks, students will be focusing on poetry as part

of their comprehension work. They will read a range of poems and learn to look closely at the words and structure to understand what the poet is trying to say. Students will practise skills such as identifying the main idea, making connections, visualising and discussing the feelings or messages in each poem. By exploring different types of poems, students will build confidence in talking about texts and learn new vocabulary in a meaningful way.

Maths

In Math we have recently been focusing on sequencing numbers and looking at patterns. In particular our focus has been to understand the rule which dictates each sequence/pattern.

For example: 2, 4, 6, 8, ...... (The rule is we are counting by 2's).

This week we will be investigating symmetry. How to create symmetrical drawings and identify symmetrical shapes and their line of symmetry.

Caring for Our Environment

Over the remaining weeks students will learn about how people can harm the environment

by wasting natural resources. They will watch short videos to help them understand what environmental waste is and think about how their own actions can contribute to the problem. Students will explore simple ways they can help care for the Earth by reducing, reusing and recycling. They then create a poster to encourage others to make environmentally friendly choices. These lesson encourage students to understand the importance of looking after our planet and how small actions can make a big difference.
