What's Happening in Grade 4?

Welcome to our first Grade Four newsletter item for 2026. 

 

All students have settled into the classroom routine and are proudly modelling our school values of learning, respect, teamwork, and resilience. Students have enjoyed participating in the “getting to know you” activities, and we have spent time revising the importance of whole body listening and always trying our best when learning. Next week, students will participate in an exciting incursion by the Proactive Policing Unit, which aims to teach students how to be safe and responsible online users.

 

Reading and Writing:

This term, students are learning about response texts and will focus on the structure and language features. Students will learn how to respond to visual, written, or performed works, such as famous artwork by Vincent van Gogh and Pixar short films. They will use positive and negative judgement words to express their preferences and opinions when responding to these works. Students will also take part in guided reading sessions with their teacher, which aims` to build new vocabulary, develop reading skills, and deepen comprehension through meaningful conversations about the texts we are reading.

 

Mathematics:

The focus for Term One will be to further develop and strengthen students’ understanding of place value. Students will model, represent, and order numbers to tens of thousands. In the non-number component of Mathematics, Grade 4 students will learn about time and make connections between analogue and digital time. Students will consolidate their learning by playing “Time Bingo” and will use other concrete materials to support and strengthen their understanding of time.

 

We are excited for a fantastic year of learning ahead and are proud of the positive way students have begun their Grade 4 journey. We look forward to working together with families to support, challenge, and celebrate our students as they continue to grow and succeed throughout the year.
