PE & SPORTS REPORT

By Tom O'Loughlin

Term 1 PE and Sport at Lucas Primary School

Foundation – Grade 2

This term in Physical Education our Foundation and Grade 1/2 students have been learning the rules and routines of PE with Mr O’Loughlin. They have been learning the fundamental motor skills of the underarm throw and the catch. Students have progressed from catching and throwing bean bags and large soft balls to tennis balls, basketballs, and odd shaped objects. Students have begun to explore the fundamental motor skill of the bounce in the final weeks of this term. With the winter basketball and netball seasons approaching students were excited to get out the basketballs and netballs to practise.

Grade 3 – 6

This term in Physical Education our senior students have been learning more complex manipulative skills related to athletics. Students have learned a different running, jumping or throwing skill each week. Students enjoyed watching the video feedback especially when learning the complex skills of triple jump and high jump. Students had also been attending extra training sessions at lunchtimes for the relay teams and now for the relay teams.

Senior Athletics Carnival

On Tuesday the 11th of March we had our Senior Athletics Carnival at Llanberris Reserve. Students participated in throwing, jumping and running events throughout the day, trying hard to beat their personal best and earn points for their house. While the weather necessitated a change to our usual rotations it was fantastic to see the house spirit on display and the support of our whole school community with many families in attendance. Students were able to do 5 event rotations before heading back to school. Most events students missed were able to be completed at school as optional school team trials. We have selected our largest ever team to represent at the Sturt District Athletics.

Well done to all those involved in the day and a special thanks to the many volunteers and secondary school students that helped the day run so smoothly.

Sturt District Athletics Carnival

We had 55 students representing Lucas Primary School at the Sturt District Athletics on Tuesday 25th of March. Final school placings are still being calculated but we are very proud of our students who brought a flurry of ribbons back to school. Fantastic effort everyone.

Sovereign Division Swimming Carnival

On Friday 21st of February we had five students represent our school at the Sovereign Division Swimming Carnival at the Ballarat Aquatic & Lifestyle Centre. All students competed in two individual events and represented our school with pride. This year was also the first time we have had a relay team with James, Oliver, Sophie and Olive placing third in the 10 years 4x50m freestyle relay with Aislinn cheering on from the side of the pool. Oliver was one second away from making it through to Regionals in Horsham in his freestyle event with James qualifying with an excellent display in the Breaststroke. He will be attending the Greater Western Regional Swimming Championships on Wednesday 26th of March. Best of luck James.

Term 2 Sports

Thanks to all parents and family members for assisting with our events in Term 1. Early next term we have our whole school cross country event which requires many volunteers for marshalling (watching students compete from a point on the course). If you are able to assist, please contact Mr Tom O’Loughlin via email or Seesaw.
