VISUAL ARTS REPORT

by Michelle Glanville

Prep

Our prep students have made a fantastic start to their Art learning. They have been learning about the rules and routines of the art room as they explore the art elements of line, shape, and colour. A big focus of our work has been to explore the way lines can make different shapes and patterns. So far, we have made some colourful Line Monsters, some Collaged and Patterned Crayons from the story book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit,’ and a fantastic Rainbow Lion. Well done, preps on such an enthusiastic term of learning.

Years 1-6

In Art this term, all classes have been learning about the Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. Kusama is an abstract artist who is known for her large-scale sculptures of flower and pumpkins, and her obsession with polka dots. The students have learnt about her popular installation art and infinity rooms. Our Years 1-6 artists have been inspired to create their own flower or pumpkin sculptures using a variety of materials including wire, plaster, Modroc, paint, foam, and clay. This has been highly engaging topic for all of our students, and it has been wonderful to see them so proud of their creations. Yayoi Kusama currently has an exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria and many of our students have made the trip down with their families to share their learning. It has been wonderful to hear about their experience in Art, and to see photos of their visit.
