TEACHING AND LEARNING

NAPLAN

We have now completed our 2025 NAPLAN assessments. All of our students were well prepared, and this was evident through their focus and engagement with the assessments. We would like to thank our community as NAPLAN is a whole school effort which involves many layers of support.

Literacy:

This week our second group of Prep - 2 teachers have completed their Sounds Write training course. Over the last six weeks, they have worked on developing their understanding of how the alphabet code is structured, and how to teach it using a sound-to-print approach. Having all Prep and 1/2 teachers now trained in Sounds Write helps us to deliver a high quality, consistent phonics approach to all students in the junior years.

Since the beginning of the term, students have participated in a daily, two-hour Literacy Block that starts with a 30-minute Sounds Write lesson, followed by Reading and Writing lessons. During Sounds Write lessons, the students learn and practise key skills such as word building, phoneme manipulation (swapping sounds within words to make new words) and dictation. Below is a photo of students from Prep C, who in their 8th week of school, are confidently building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words with the letters they know and writing them on their mini whiteboards. Tutor Learning Initiative Update

Years P-2

This term, students participating in the 1/ 2 Literacy tutoring program have been busy developing their knowledge of building and segmenting words. Students have enjoyed playing games such as ‘I Spy A Rhyme,’ Sound Bingo and Sound Swap to assist them in practising skills such as rhyming, sound articulation, spelling and word recognition.

Years 3-6

Throughout the term, our amazing tutors Mrs Tapscott and Mrs Duncan have been working with our Year 3 and 5 students to support them in their preparation for NAPLAN. They have focused on developing test taking strategies and familiarising students with the online testing platform. All students thoroughly enjoyed the program and are always excited to complete Reading, Writing and Numeracy tasks with our tutoring team!

Intervention

Our Education Support Staff have been running Literacy and Numeracy intervention programs in the afternoon. This initiative provides targeted support to students through small group sessions. Our Education Support staff work closely with classroom teachers to ensure our intervention sessions compliment topics engaged in the classroom. All students engage two session per week to provide them with multiple exposures.

Planning Week

Week 9 is planning week. During this week, all PLC teams are released to plan together for the term ahead. This provides teachers with an opportunity to extensively review the relevant curriculum area and plan a sequenced term full of learning, incursions and excursions.
