STUDENT  LEARNING

Celebrations of learning at Lucas Primary School

Year 3/4

This week in 3/4 we have been looking at Fractions. We have been investigating halves, quarters, eights, thirds and fifths. We have explored proper fractions, looking at the numerator, denominator, and how fractions are made up of equal parts. To expand on our learning, we have created our own fraction walls, practised creating equal fractions, identified written fractions to their matching pictures through bingo games and began exploring equivalent fractions. We have also started noticing incidental fractions in real life, such as in our lunch boxes with things like our sandwiches and fruit!

Year 5/6

The students in 5/6 have had a busy term learning about Civics and Citizenship.

They have learned about the different levels of government and what each member in the government’s roles are.

They have been learning about what rights we have as citizens and how we can improve our community. Students have been writing letters to outline areas they have identified in our community that they would like to see improvement. Some students identified that sports are expensive, or that there are homeless people who could have more support and that we need to have improvements made to our roads throughout the town.

Students have also written what they would do if they were Prime Minister for a day. Some of their ideas outlined having a shorter working/school week, more income and higher support in schools. To end the unit, students will be writing a letter to a member of parliament defining their ideas that they believe would improve our community.
