High Abilities excursion - DNA barcodes at GTAC

Our excursion to GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre) was an incredible opportunity to experience real-world science beyond the classroom.
The focus of the day was to investigate and identify the DNA barcodes of parasites, with the aim of understanding how they can be targeted and eliminated. We took part in every step of the process, working like real scientists in a professional lab setting. We used a range of advanced scientific tools, including micropipettes, a centrifuge (spinner machine), and an electrophoresis machine to extract, process, and analyse DNA samples.
Travelling by public transport added to the sense of independence and responsibility, making the experience even more memorable.
We are truly grateful to our organising teacher for providing us with this enriching opportunity, and to the knowledgeable and supportive staff at GTAC for guiding us throughout the day.
It was an inspiring experience that deepened our appreciation for molecular biology and its real-world applications.
