Connect: Year 1

Welcome Back, Grade 1 Families!
We hope you had a restful and joyful school holiday filled with special moments and fun adventures. We’re now into our second week of the term, and it’s been such a joy to see the children settling back into routines, reconnecting with friends, and diving into their learning with enthusiasm.
Key Dates:
Thursday 8th May | Mother's Day Stall |
Friday 9th May | Mother's Day Breakfast |
Friday 16th May | Walk to School Day |
UPCOMING LEARNING:
LITTLE LEARNERS
In the upcoming learning block of our Little Learners Love Literacy program, students will be exploring the sounds ‘or’ and ‘aw’, along with the r-controlled vowel sounds ‘ir’, ‘ur’, and ‘er’. This is a great opportunity to reinforce their understanding of phonemes (the sounds we hear) and graphemes (the letters or combinations of letters that represent those sounds).
WRITING:
In our writing block, students will continue learning about Ancient Egypt. They will use what they’ve discovered about pharaohs, pyramids, and daily life to help them write simple sentences responding to literal and inferential questions. This helps them practise using new words, organising their ideas, and writing to share what they know.
The Grade 1 Students were lucky enough to be treated with an Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Map that Carson Watts from 1E brought in to share with our students. Well done, Carson!
The students in 1A worked wonderfully together during their Ancient Egyptian Craft session, where they created colourful Ancient Egyptian collars. Well done 1A!
NUMERACY:
Over the next fortnight, students are continuing to build upon their understanding of two-digit numbers. A key focus of this topic is applying place value and partitioning to represent numbers in different ways and applying this knowledge to solve problems. They are supported in this skill by using base-10 blocks, ten-frames and number bonds.
INQUIRY:
In Inquiry, Grade 1 students will be exploring what life was like in Ancient Egyptian communities. They’ll learn about the roles of people, homes, jobs, and traditions, and compare these to how we live today. This helps them understand similarities and differences between past and present communities.
Wellbeing:
Students will continue to build their understanding of positive coping strategies to use when they are feeling strong emotions, as part of our ongoing work with the ‘Zones of Regulation’. They are learning how to recognise which ‘zone’ they’re in and how to choose tools to help them feel calm, focused, and ready to learn.
