Prep Art

Welcome back to Term 2! Our Prep students have had an exciting last two weeks in Art. In Week 1, they inquired into the importance of  Anzac Day and learnt what the word, 'ANZAC' stands for. Through thinking about the elements of line, shape and colour, they created Anzac Ted pictures. In Week 2, students linked back to the Prep central idea: ‘Similarities and differences build relationships’ and aligned their learning by engaging in meaningful discussions and artistic expressions that explored personal identities, preferences, and emotions. Students used water colours to paint and complete their self portraits created in Term 1. Well done on a great start to Term 2 Preps. Bring on the remainder of the term.

Grade 5 & 6 Art

In the first two weeks of Term 2, Grade 5 and 6 students have been busy finishing off any outstanding work from last term and preparing for new learning. They created radial symmetry poppy designs to commemorate ANZAC Day, focusing on pattern, balance, and symbolism. Students have also been setting up their art journals, ready to dive into their new unit starting next week.

MEDIA: With Mr. Brendan Howarth

Hello families!

My name is Mr. Howarth and I am teaching Media from Prep to Year Six this year. Each term, a new cohort of classes will start Media. For the classes who had Music in Term One, they will now have Media in Term Two. Those who had Media in Term One will have Music with Mr. Saxton.

In Media, we learn how we can communicate messages and ideas through different media mediums, including photography, sound, filming, advertising, visual narratives, etc. Students also analyse and interpret media texts with cross-curricular connections made with Literacy, Numeracy, Language and the Arts.

Our unit topics include migration, Indigenous history, our emotions, advertising, and Who We Are.

I am looking forward to getting to know all students throughout the year.

Grade 1& 2 Art

Welcome back for another exciting term in Art!

Im very pleased with the work produced in art already!  To commemorate Anzac day, the students created some amazing poppies and Anzac Ted directed drawings. The work produced was quite impressive.  Each art piece  added sentimental value to remembering our soldiers, who sacrificed their lives for our country

and for us!   Just like our heroes, the students worked collaboratively to create a giant poppy and a field of poppies with some very heroic Anzac Teds, indeed!  In week 2 students celebrated the beauty of Autumn and all its glorious colours by creating a large Autumn Tree.  They added real/paper

leaves to complete a 'life like Autumn Tree ', in our Year 1&2 Art room! Most importantly, students added some unique features to their leaves...creating some funny 'leaf men or animate creatures,' to liven their art work! What a joyous and  wonderful start to Term 2!

Grade 3 and 4 Art

Wow and welcome back to Term 2 Art! We hope you’ve had a restful and refreshing break. We’re excited to see more of your amazing artistic flair this term!

In our short first week back, we’ve jumped straight into creativity by making posters to pay our respects and commemorate ANZAC Day and the fallen heroes who served our country.

This term, we’re looking forward to seeing you dive into your learning, collaborate with others, explore new art skills, and most importantly—have fun doing it!

Let’s make Term 2 a vibrant and inspiring one!

Welcome Back to Term 2 – Spanish at Saltwater P-9 College

¡Hola y bienvenidos!

We are excited to welcome all students back to Spanish classes for Term 2 at Saltwater P-9 College! This term, students will continue to build their basic Spanish vocabulary through a variety of fun activities, including songs, colouring, games, and hands-on learning experiences.

Students will practise greeting their teachers and peers using the most common Spanish greetings, such as hola (hello), buenos días (good morning), and adiós (goodbye). We will also expand our vocabulary by learning the names of fruits, animals, and daily routines in Spanish, helping students use the language in everyday situations.

In the upper grades, students will take their learning even further by exploring cultural celebrations from Spanish-speaking countries. They will learn about the traditions, festivals, and special events that make each culture unique, building a deeper understanding of the Spanish-speaking world.

Our Spanish lessons incorporate storytelling, videos, and kinaesthetic activities to make learning active, engaging, and accessible for all students. We look forward to another exciting term filled with language, culture, and lots of fun!

PE Team Announcement

This term, we are sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Norton, who will be heading off on maternity leave. We wish her all the best in this exciting new chapter of her life! Saltwater P-9 will miss her greatly and we look forward to hearing from her soon.

While we are sad to see Mrs. Norton step away for the year, we are thrilled to announce that Mr Gleeson will be taking over her classes for the remainder of 2025. Mr Gleeson has already been a familiar face around the school this year, working in various roles, and we are excited to now officially welcome him into a permanent position as part of our PE team!

Meet Mr Gleeson!

Hi my name is Mr. Gleeson. I’m passionate about all sports, In particular AFL (the mighty pies), cricket, golf and basketball. I enjoy travelling, spending time with family and friends. I’ve only been at Saltwater College for a short period of time and I’m already loving it! I can’t wait to get more involved and meet everyone.

Wellbeing:

The first 2 weeks of Term 2 has been a busy one for all our students. All students have been working on a Classroom Tree. This tree made up of student hands, is to continue to celebrate the community we have at Saltwater P-9 College. In each hand students were to write the 5 principles we aim to follow in Wellbeing. These include; Respect, Honesty, Participation, Risk-taking and Kindness. By creating a classroom environment that supports these principles we aim to ensure that all students feel welcomed when entering the wellbeing classroom.

Unfortunately, we also said our goodbyes to Kristianna Economou who was with us for a short time but will be missed. For those that did not know Kristianna, she worked 2 days a week and played a big role in the wellbeing program.

Next week, students will be working on identifying their strengths and weaknesses and strategies to help overcome negative thoughts and feelings.

迎接新学期,欢迎回来!

Welcome back to Term 2!

We are excited to continue our Mandarin learning journey this term. Students will be exploring new topics, building their vocabulary, and practising their speaking skills in fun and interactive ways. It’s wonderful to see their confidence growing each week. We look forward to another great term of learning together!

Our Prep to Year 2 students will be introduced to Chinese traditional culture, learning about beautiful customs like calligraphy, porcelain, and paper cutting.

Year 3–4 students will continue to strengthen their conversation skills by learning how to introduce themselves in Mandarin, sharing details such as their name, age, and interests.

In Year 5–6, students are beginning an exciting new topic about pets. They will learn how to talk about different pets in Mandarin and discuss how to take care of them. Through fun activities and projects, students will build both their vocabulary and their confidence when speaking about familiar topics.

This term promises to be full of creativity, discovery, and language growth across all year levels. We are so proud of how our students are embracing Mandarin with enthusiasm and resilience. Thank you for your continued support at home. We can’t wait to see all the wonderful progress they will make!

Music

Hello Amazing Parents and Students!

We’re thrilled to share what’s happening in Primary Music!

Each week, students from 21 vibrant classes across Grades P–6 dive into the world of music during their dedicated sessions. Our latest group of students kicked off last week and are already singing, playing, and exploring instruments as they embark on an exciting musical journey this term!

Prep students have jumped right in, singing lively songs like BINGO and Tingalayo. They’re also learning the important skills of holding percussion instruments in ready and resting positions — all while exploring a variety of sounds and rhythms.

Grade One students are busy practicing the classic favourite Hot Cross Buns on tuned percussion, developing their skills in melody and timing.

Grade Two students are working hard rehearsing the playful and energetic piece “Can You Dig That Crazy Gibberish?” as a full percussion ensemble — a fantastic exercise in rhythm and teamwork!

Grade Three students have been exploring simple percussion songs and are about to launch into rehearsals of the joyful and spirited piece Funga Alafia.

Grade Four students have learned two percussion songs as a whole class and are now stepping up to the challenge of working in small groups to create their own small ensemble performances.

In Grades Five and Six, students are beginning rehearsals of the beautiful Ghanaian song Sansa Kroma as a whole class. They will soon have the opportunity to collaborate in small groups — either preparing percussion performances or composing their own original pieces.

It’s been a fantastic start to the term, and we can’t wait to see the creativity, collaboration, and confidence our students continue to build through music!

Cheers,

The Music Department

DANCE.

Dance has started the term off in fine form with the Year 4 classes picking up where they left off. Group exercises and certain tasks have seen the students reconnecting in class and with one another, while achieving all that was set out before them. Classes have engaged in time management and problem solving exercises, while expanding their creativity to compile some great routines together. We also worked on patterns and various timing exercises, where everyone is dancing at different times with set guidelines to adhere to. This created more self awareness along with team building and trust within one another, to work together to achieve the end result.

VSSS...Dance

Rehearsals have continued with VSSS as we draw closer to another upcoming combined schools hub rehearsal in week 4. Students have been working hard on the finer details set out in the choreography and the team bonding and team work has been great also. Rehearsals have been fun, educational and insightful as have opened students minds to what else is possible through hard work, commitment and dedication.

Wakakirri...Dance

Wakakirri rehearsals are in full swing as we begin Term 2. With so much to achieve with our performance this term, everyone is working so hard and practising inside and outside of the studio also. The energy, effort and eagerness the students have displayed throughout has been amazing and would make any teacher proud. There is still so much yet to do, however with their amazing work ethic I know they will achieve this and more! Watch this space!
