Year Six

Dear Year Six Community,
Term Two has begun with great excitement for our Year Six cohort, with a range of activities and leadership opportunities now underway. Our First Aid Leaders are already making a wonderful impact, supporting the school community and their peers in various ways. Additionally, some students will soon take on important roles such as Office Assistant, Wellbeing Leader, and Environmental Leader — each playing a vital part in ensuring our school continues to thrive. The dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm demonstrated by our leaders is truly inspiring.
Students have also received their Year Six polo shirts and can be seen wearing them with pride, making for a truly wonderful sight around the school.
ANZAC Day
Saltwater P-9 College recognises the significance of ANZAC Day and the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand soldiers. Students have commemorated this day through a variety of activities in the classroom. On Monday the 28th April, student leaders from Year Six (along with students from other year levels) were selected to represent our school to attend a service at the Shrine of Remembrance. We are so proud of how well the students conducted themselves on this important day.
Inquiry
The start of Term Two saw the commencement of our new Unit of Inquiry, with the Central Idea of Historical Events have shaped how Australia looks today. Students have been engaging in a variety activities to immerse themselves in the unit and learn about some of the important events in our history such as the Gold Rush, World War II and Australia before and after 1788 with the arrival of the First Fleet. They have expressed their wonderings and posed some fantastic questions that they will get the opportunity to investigate as the unit progresses.
Literacy
In Literacy, students have been learning about Historical fiction, unpacking the important elements that of this genre through Mentor Texts. They are now beginning to experiment with writing their own historical narratives. Additionally, students have explored different historical timelines which are strongly linked to our current Unit of Inquiry, along with the significant events that have occurred in our history and their impact.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been exploring the Units of Measurement concept. They have been learning to calculate the area and perimeter of 2D shapes, as well as understanding concepts of length, mass, volume, and capacity. Students have applied formulas in practical scenarios and tackled a range of problem-solving tasks, with a strong focus on explaining their thinking. During our lessons, they have enjoyed experimenting with both formal and informal tools to measure various objects. Students have really enjoyed using hands-on materials while they actively engage with, and deepen their understanding of measurement.
