Year Five

Dear Year Five families and carers,

Welcome back to Term Two! We hope you had a restful break and are feeling refreshed for the exciting term ahead. We’re looking forward to a wonderful term of learning, growth, and new experiences with our Year 5 students.

Literacy

In writing we have begun our poetry unit, students began by completing a 'free verse' poem on the topic of their choice.   Throughout the unit they will be exposed to various poetry genres, such as haiku, limericks and shape poems. This exposure will act as a model for students to create their own poems. If you notice your child staring dreamily at the sunset and scribbling into a notebook, you'll know why!

Our reading unit is linked with our second unit of inquiry and students have been reading and reflecting on First Nations people's Dreaming stories.  Where possible, we try and utilise stories from the Bunurong People and from the wider Kulin Nation.   Reflecting on these stories, which have been passed down for thousands of years, helps our students understand, and learn from the deep and continuous connections that First Nations peoples have to Country.

Unit of Inquiry Two

Our second unit of inquiry is under the transdiciplinary theme, 'How We Express Ourselves' with our central idea 'Dreaming stories have different purposes and can take  many forms'. This unit was informed by student agency where our Year Five Koori students were invited into our planning session. These students gave the teachers valuable insights and ideas which will help make this unit far richer. This unit will also allow student to 'take action' (an important part of the IB program)  through participating in a Reconciliation Walk around the local neighbourhood.

Maths

We have been  learning how to place decimals (to the tenths) accurately on a number line. They practised identifying where decimals belong between whole numbers and learned how to divide a number line into tenths. Students also worked on explaining their thinking, helping to build a strong understanding of place value and number patterns.

ANZAC Day

In the lead up to ANZAC Day, students participated in discussions and engaging activities focused on this significant event. They explored mentor texts and watched informative videos to broaden their understanding of the history and importance of this event. Students then took part in reflective tasks, allowing them to share their learning and express the different ways ANZAC Day is commemorated.
