Year One

Dear Year One Community,

Welcome Back

Welcome to Term Two! It has been wonderful to see our students return with such enthusiasm and positivity. They have settled into the new term beautifully, and our teachers are incredibly proud of the way they’ve embraced their learning. It’s been a fantastic start, filled with curiosity, creativity, and care.

Reading

In Reading, students have continued exploring the concept of making connections with the texts they read. We’ve focused particularly on text-to-self connections using the book Little Elliott, Big Family, which ties in beautifully with our Unit of Inquiry about relationships and belonging. Students have also been learning to make text-to-text connections, comparing familiar stories like Goldilocks and the Three Bears with new and humorous versions such as Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs. They’ve enjoyed discussing how the stories are alike by looking at the characters, plot, and emotions.

Writing

In Writing, students began the term by reflecting on their holiday experiences. They created a “seed” in their writer’s notebook through drawing and writing, which helped them to brainstorm ideas before crafting a well-structured recount. They used their knowledge of sentence structure and the features of recount writing to tell detailed stories about their holidays. We’ve also focused on grammar, with students becoming more confident in identifying and using nouns, verbs, and adjectives to write clear, simple sentences. As part of our ANZAC Day reflections, students listened to stories and wrote about what ANZAC Day means to them, demonstrating great empathy and understanding.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been wrapping up their unit on place value. They have been learning to partition numbers into tens and ones, and have used number lines to show their understanding of value and order. This foundational knowledge is helping to prepare them for our next focus: additive thinking. Students will be exploring how addition and subtraction are connected, setting the stage for problem-solving with confidence.

Inquiry

During Inquiry, students delved into Line of Inquiry 2: how we build and maintain relationships. They read the engaging mentor text How to Make Friends in 6 Easy Steps, which sparked rich discussions about friendship and what it means to be a good friend. Students shared their own ideas and experiences, helping to build a positive and inclusive classroom community.

ANZAC Day

Our students participated respectfully in the school’s ANZAC Day service. They listened quietly to the Last Post and stood for a minute’s silence to remember and honour those who served and sacrificed for our country. We are so proud of the maturity and respect they displayed during this important commemoration.

Homework

As part of our homework students created a family tree to help explore positive relationships by learning about their own family connections.
