Year 6 Newsletter - Week 9
Dear parents and carers,
Well winter has definitely arrived this week! The students have often arrived in the rain and we have all enjoyed the warmth of our rooms! Please encourage the students to dress warmly ready for these cold days as we will still try and get outside whenever we can during recess and lunch breaks.
This week in Year 6:
Maths: This week we have begun our unit on Division, revising what we can remember from previous years and building on that knowledge with more complex division tasks. This unit again reminds us of the importance of knowing our times tables. Please try and encourage practice whenever there is time (even if that’s quick fire times tables questions at the dinner table or in the car). The better the automatic recall of the times tables becomes, the easier maths will be going into high school next year.
Reading: Literacy Circle meetings have continued with the general standard of work being so impressive! The meetings have seen fantastic discussion and insight into the books, demonstrating a high level of understanding and interest in characters and storylines. This week will be our final Literacy Circles meetings before we start reflection tasks about the book.
Writing: We have been working hard learning the structure of a debate, how to find reliable sources for evidence, how to speak to an audience and rebuttal techniques. We are now ready to form debating teams and we will finish the term with class debates which will be exciting!
Inquiry: We have continued to explore the history of Australia’s government, how laws are made and the Federation. We created our own classroom country made up of 14 colonies, had a preferential vote to decide our country's name and we are now working towards agreeing on a constitution by voting in a referendum. Creating their own ballot papers, voting and seeing the preferential counting system in action has provided a fantastic learning experience for the students and created a lot of excitement in class!
