Year 5 Newsletter- Week 9 & 10

Dear Year 5 Families,

The holidays are coming up quickly! We are all looking forward to the winter break. It will be good to recharge our batteries in preparation for a brilliant Term 3.

What’s so great about Term 3? Term 3 brings learning with fewer interruptions. It brings (hopefully) warmer weather and it brings 10 weeks of investigating one of our favourite Inquiry units: The Gold Rush - Good, Bad or Ugly? We can’t wait to explore Australia’s gold rush and the impact it has had on our modern world. Keep an eye out for the Compass notice for the excursion to Sovereign Hill. It will be an opportunity to be immersed in the way people lived and of course to pan for gold.

Literacy Circles has been a roller coaster of achievements. Our first cycle has ended and we are so proud of the growth made by our students. At the start of the cycle, many found the deadlines of reading, writing and being prepared for the group meetings, difficult. By the end of the five weeks, most students have been comfortable achieving those goals and we have been impressed by the depth of their understanding of the texts. The students have done a wonderful job of analysing their books. Your child’s assessment rubric and novel reflection will be sent home shortly. Literacy Circles will be back in Term 4.

During writing, we have planned, drafted, edited and published narratives. The focus was to create a 6-paragraphed text that included a title, orientation, complication, resolution and a conclusion, that was able to grip the attention of the reader through interesting starters, vocabulary, use of figurative language and well edited punctuation.

In math, we have explored multiplication including factors, multiples, prime numbers, composite numbers and square numbers. One of the discoveries made was that the term ‘square numbers’ is used to describe those particular numbers of objects that can be arranged to form a square.

Remember to book your child’s PST time for Wednesday. See you then.

Kind regards,

Claire, Michael, Sarah and Michelle
