Grade 2 Community News
Dear Grade, 2 Families and Carers,
Here comes the end of two more successful weeks! The grade 2 students are demonstrating great resilience and growth in many areas. We are excited to showcase some of the fine work that the students have developed during these weeks.
Reading
As mentioned in the previous newsletter, in reading, the students have started our new Read 2 Learn topic: Geography of Australia and is in the process of further exploring the topic. The students have learned information about the Great Barrier Reef and Australian Outback. We are using reader’s theatre in classrooms to improve fluency. Reader’s theatre is a fun approach to practise fluency as students get to choose characters and act out their parts while reading.
Writing
In Writing, students have continued to write a conclusion based on a geographical data set. To extend learning, the students were challenged to create questions of their own and answer the questions created by them using the RAP model. The RAP model is Restate the question, Answer the question, and prove the answer.
Morphology
This week in Morphology, we applied the suffix ‘ish’ to nouns and adjectives and applied the suffix ‘ion’ to verbs. We analysed how this changed the meaning of the word and applied the appropriate spelling rule when adding the suffix.
Week 8 Vocabulary Words
Numeracy
In Numeracy, the Grade 2s have been exploring different strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. Many opportunities will be given throughout the unit for students to solve real life worded problems and use strategies to solve these problems. Students have loved listening to real life problems and were able to learn the split strategy, jump strategy, commutativity, and fact families.
Geography
In Geography, the students were learning about significant places in Australia. Instead of teachers giving all the information, students had the opportunity to pick a significant place in Australia and conduct research. During the lesson, they discussed and inquired the reasons for visiting certain places in Australia and why these places considered significant.
Friendly reminders:
- Please ensure you are continuing to support your child in getting to school by 8:45am, so that they are not missing any valuable learning time (and can reach their attendance reward goals!)
- Encourage your child to read every night and record it in their reading journal as part of our take home reading program.
It has been fantastic to witness our students’ continued growth! Once again, we thank you for your ongoing support.
