Grade 1 Community News

Dear Grade 1 families,

As we near the end of a marvellous term filled with remarkable growth and amazing learning experiences, we are thrilled to update you on the latest happenings in our Grade 1 community!

Reading

We have been delving into our serial text ‘The Enchanted Wood’ by Enid Blyton, and learning to identify and describe the inside and outside traits of our favourite characters, like Moonface and the Saucepan Man. We have also discussed the relationships between characters in the book and made links to relationships we have in our own lives. Our exploration of The Enchanted Wood doesn’t end there! We are currently looking at the key themes of this text, including bravery, magic and wonder, and are starting to think about how we might see these themes in our everyday lives.

Writing

Our Grade 1 classes have moved on from writing information reports and have started writing narratives. In our writing lessons we have learnt the structure of a narrative. This includes -

Orientation: Introduces characters and setting

Complication: Problem that character's face

Resolution: Solution to the problem

We are continuing to follow the writing process by ensuring that we plan our writing, create our initial draft, revise and edit our draft, then publish our final writing piece. We are looking forward to creating our own characters, settings, problems and solutions, and sharing our published narratives with our peers.

Maths

Our subtraction topic is well underway, and we have been diving into subtracting objects with manipulative materials. We have enjoyed participating in many hands-on experiences to develop and further our understanding of subtracting numbers. We have been using different strategies, such as counting backwards and using our friends of 10 knowledge, to explore subtraction.

Vocabulary

In Vocabulary, we have been able to demonstrate our understanding of new vocabulary words from our serial text ‘The Enchanted Wood’ in different ways. For example - saying the definition of these words, using them in a sentence, matching our vocabulary words to the appropriate pictures, and acting them out in a scenario.
