BSC Assembly of Achievement

On Thursday 25th July, Bairnsdale Secondary College were pleased to welcome students, staff, families, and special guest, Mr Tim Bull, to our whole school assembly for Term 3.

During this assembly we acknowledged and celebrated the students of our College in a range of fields including leadership, sporting, musical and academic achievements. It is important to recognise the outstanding efforts these students have made to achieve their goals, engage in life changing experiences and to contribute to their own learning.

The achievements have not come about just because these people have talent, but because their effort is extraordinary. They have applied a high level of effort to achieve a goal. Outstanding achievements are always the result of effort and commitment, and it is this that we celebrated in this assembly.

Student Leaders

Our first group of students to be recognised were our new Year level student leaders. These students along with the current leaders have been selected for their ability to lead with integrity, inspire their peers and work towards a better school environment for us all.

Bairnsdale Secondary College recently received individual Naplan scores for Years 7 and 9 students. While all students engaged in the Naplan testing and represented our College admirably, we are so proud of our students who excelled and demonstrated strong proficiency in multiple domains that have exceeded the national benchmark for their age.

School for Student Leadership

We welcomed Year 9 students Gracie, Thomas, Jakob and Sam to share highlights from the School for Student Leadership camp.

Monash Scholars

Congratulations to Year 10 students Mackenzy, Alex and Ayla who have been accepted into the 2024 Monash Scholars Program.

Each year, applications are accepted from Year 10 students only. If accepted into the program, students participate across years 10-12.

Monash Scholars is a prestigious program for high achieving secondary school students based in Victoria. The program is offered by Monash University to give high potential students a unique head start into university life. It provides opportunities for personal and academic development, as well as, giving students the knowledge, skills and confidence to make the right study choices. It also enables them to expand their network of like-minded peers.

Monash University United Nations

The following students participated in the Monash University Model United Nations 2024 on Indigenous Peoples Rights. The student’s topic was Hear My Voice: Recognising the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. They were allocated China and Panama as their countries and students had to create and present a position statement representing each of these countries. The students then spoke and negotiated with other nations to create an amendment. The countries debated those amendments and at the end of the session they voted. The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience.

Congratulations to: Zayn, Zeke, Ryan, Harriet, Mikayla and Ava

Work experience

Work experience is an important aspect of our students’ educational journey.  This invaluable opportunity allows our students to step outside the classroom and gain firsthand insight into the professional world, helping to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application.

Work experience not only provides students with a taste of their future careers but also helps them develop essential skills such as teamwork, communication problem solving, and adaptability

These experiences are crucial in shaping well rounded individuals who are ready to face the challenges of the modern workplace.

The following students have represented the college well by receiving glowing evaluation reports from their work experience employers:

Zane - Year 11 – Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action - DEECA

Ethan - Year 10 – Vline

Flynn - Year 10 – Desio Bagnato Garage

Kayla - Year 10 – The Vet & Co, Orbost

School Based Apprenticeships

The following students have been successful in obtaining School Based Apprenticeships in 2024 through the Headstart program.

Students with an SBAT are continuing their school educations while starting an apprenticeship in a workplace.

Andi - Year 11 – Certificate II in Supply Chain Operations with Reece Plumbing three days a week.

Henry - Year 11 – Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology with Peter Dullard Ford two days a week.

Oscar - Year 10 – Boat Building works with Frecheville Heaney Boat Builders Paynesville two days a week.

Kiah - Year 11 – Certificate III in Hairdressing with Style & Co Hairdressers two days a week.

Kokoda

The Arthur Grassby Scholarship, named in honour of the Kokoda veteran who lived in Bairnsdale, provides funding for Year 11 students (the age of many of the soldiers), the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the brave, and those from Gippsland who fought one of the most desperate series of battles across the Owen Stanley Ranges from Kokoda to the doorstep of Port Moresby.

Students were invited to write an essay on Kokoda, with a focus on the involvement of those from their area and the importance of the campaign in Australian history. From these essays, students were shortlisted for interview and selected by an independent panel made up of ex-service personnel from local RSL Clubs.

We welcomed the students who recently participated in the Arthur Grasby Kokoda Trek - Perry, Grace, Logan, Tilly, Andrew, Connor and Rose to the stage to reflect on their experience on the Kokoda trail.

Basketball

During the Term 2 holidays Taydyn (Year 11) travelled to Las Vegas and Phoenix with AUSA Hoops, a college recruiting company for Basketball.

Trials were held in Melbourne last year and team selection was in May this year.

The tournaments were held in Vegas and Phoenix and sponsored by Puma and NXT Pro. Everyone had to wear Puma gear.

Taydyns’ height is 6’ 5 which is average in the stadiums over there, his tallest opponent he played was 7 ft. Play style was quicker and more physical than the Australian style of play

Most days they trained for 3-4 hours with team activities to fill in the rest of the time. He stayed at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) a division 1 school and the Arizona Christian University (ACU) a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics School.

The weather was 45 degrees almost every day. The hottest day was 49 degrees. The coldest it reached was 29 degrees overnight.

The next step for Taydyn is contacting College Coaches. Well done, Taydyn, what a wonderful achievement, we wish you the best of luck!
