Responsible Pet Ownership Program

Responsible pet ownership

Summary

In the morning, the NPS students learnt about how they should act around Dogs and Cats. When walking around a dog or cat, you should ask the owner if it’s ok to pat their pet, if it is then you hold your hand with your palm down with your fingers tucked in and then slowly start to pat it on its back. You don’t want to pat it on its head because you don’t know them and thy might get scared. Once your done patting then slowly take your hand off and quietly walk off.

How to keep your pet safe

If you have a small dog, make sure your yard fence doesn’t have any small holes they could get through as this would make it easy for them to run away, if this is an issue make sure your pet has a microchip, this is so if they run of with no ID than they can be identified by taking them to the vet, as they can see who it belongs to.

What to do

if a dog is aggressively barking at you, make sure to put your hands by your side and have your head down, do not make eye contact as the dog may take that as a challenge and charge at you. Then try stay still till the dog walks away. If the dog doesn’t walk away, then slowly back off in that position.

How to care for your pet

To care for your pet, make sure it has a healthy diet and being feed the right amount a day, and make sure your dog or cat has access to clean water. Make sure they have space to run around and play in the back or front yard, but if they don’t have this try to take them on a walk instead.

Desexing

Desexing pets is very important. If your pets are not desexed then they could breed with stray animals or other animals around your property, and if this happen they might have to many kittens or puppies, then you might have to give them away to the pound as you might not be able to look after them.  Also, if you have to give them to the pound and they don’t get adopted within 8 days the kittens or puppies will have to be put down to stop the overcrowding in the pound.
