Curriculum News - Year 3

Welcome to Term 3, we are looking forward to an exciting and busy term. We have our Healesville excursion in Week 5 and swimming in the last 2 weeks of term.

Unit of Inquiry

Transdisciplinary Theme

Sharing the planet

 

Central Idea: 

Survival of a species is dependent on its environmental conditions​.

 

 Lines of inquiry:

  • Living and nonliving things
  • The differences between living, once living and products of living things
  • Species in danger of becoming extinct
  • Factors affecting the survival of some species

Literacy

This Term, Year 3 students will continue to build on their comprehension skills through various text types with a focus on non-fiction books. They will be exposed to a broad variety of reading materials including Literacy Planet articles and stories, epic books, guided reading books, silent reading books and class novels.

 

We will continue to use the Daily 5 to further develop comprehension, reading accuracy and fluency and expanding vocabulary. The Daily 5 structure is:  Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Work with Words and Work on Writing. 

 

This term our writing focus will be on writing Narratives and Information Reports. We will explore a variety of strategies to improve our writing such as the use of similes, vivid verbs and dialogue. Students will continue to build on their editing skills through writing sessions and will explore various aspects of writing, using their Writer's Notebook. 

 

During handwriting sessions, the focus will continue on joined writing and letter formation in preparation for students obtaining their Joining Licence.

 

Speaking & Listening

This term the students are focusing on preparing a factual narrative about an endangered species of their choice. These stories will be shared through Flipgrid and read to the younger students to help raise awareness of endangered animals and encourage people to take action. 

Numeracy

Number and Algebra

During Term 3 the students will continue to focus on all areas of number, in particular focusing on the relationship between multiplication and division and fractions.  They will use their knowledge of number to assist in calculating money and giving change and develop their understanding of decimals.

 

Measurement 

The focus for measurement this term will be understanding angles and 3D shapes.

 

Space  

The focus in space will be looking at making and comparing objects.
