Last week, the 5/6s delved into the history and significance of NAIDOC Week. They learnt that it all began with a protest in Sydney called The Day of Mourning, led by William Cooper, the founder of the Australian Aboriginal League. This protest was in response to the date of Australia Day and aimed to highlight the rights of Aboriginal people. It marked one of the first civil rights protests, gaining momentum worldwide for the rights of all Aboriginal people.
Students explored how NAIDOC Week has become an annual celebration each July, connecting communities and recognising the history, achievements, and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Students compared and discussed this year's theme, 'Keep The Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud,' which encourages everyone to celebrate Indigenous culture and heritage with pride and passion. To last year's theme, 'For Our Elders,' which highlighted the important role that elders play in the lives of Indigenous Australians. Students then discovered how the themes of NAIDOC Week continue to raise awareness of Indigenous rights and contributions of these communities.
